Chapter 4 - THE PALACE ON LAKE SHORE DRIVEThe Rolls-Royce swept through the wrought-iron security gates of a sprawling limestone estate nestled directly on the shores of Lake Michigan. This was the Whitmore family compound—a fortress of old-money opulence that made Nathan’s modern glass penthouse look like a glorified hotel room.

As the car came to a smooth halt, Marcus opened the door. Clare stepped out into the crisp evening air, her hand resting softly on her swollen stomach.
Standing on the grand marble steps of the mansion was an elderly man with silver hair, sharp, piercing blue eyes, and a posture that commanded absolute authority. Edward Whitmore.
For six years, Edward had respected his daughter’s wish to live an ordinary life, watching from afar as Nathan Caldwell slowly revealed his true, arrogant colors. But a father’s patience has limits, and threatening an unborn Whitmore heir crossed a line that warranted total annihilation.
"Clare," Edward said, stepping forward and opening his arms. For the first time in years, the icy facade of the billionaire patriarch melted into the warmth of a loving father.
Clare walked into his embrace, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Dad."
"You’re safe here, sweetheart," Edward murmured, kissing the top of her head before gently pulling back to look at her face, his eyes dropping to her baby bump. "And so is my grandchild. You never should have had to endure that man’s arrogance for this long."
"I wanted to build something real," Clare said quietly, looking out over the frozen lake. "I wanted him to love me for me, not for my name or my family’s wealth. But I finally learned what happens when you give a man a ladder—he spends all his time climbing, and eventually, he looks down at the person holding the base and decides they’re just dead weight."
Edward’s eyes hardened into flint. "Well, little bird, he picked the wrong tree to chop down. Harrison Vance has already frozen Caldwell Innovations' funding rounds, seized their secondary debt, and initiated a complete debt-restructuring foreclosure. By Monday morning, your husband won’t even own the desk he sits at."
As if on cue, the crunch of gravel echoed up the private driveway.

A sleek black Mercedes AMG sped up the lane, skidding slightly on the icy pavement before slamming to a halt right in front of the steps.
The driver’s side door flew open, and Nathan Caldwell tumbled out, looking thoroughly unraveled, his tie crooked, his expensive suit wrinkled from panic.
