Chapter 5 - THE DESPERATE PLEA"Clare!" Nathan shouted, running up the stone steps, completely ignoring the two armed security guards who instantly stepped into his path, their hands resting ominously inside their jackets.

Edward Whitmore raised a single hand, signaling the guards to hold their position. He didn't flinch. He simply stood beside his daughter, looking down at Nathan with the cold detachment of a apex predator observing a trapped mouse.

Nathan stopped dead in his tracks, chest heaving, his eyes wide with a manic mix of disbelief, fury, and sheer terror.

"Clare," Nathan panted, ignoring Edward entirely as he focused desperately on his estranged wife. "What... what is the meaning of this? What are these insane legal notices hitting my company? My CFO says our accounts are frozen, our debt is being called in, and Apex Capital claims you ordered the entire shutdown!"

Clare didn't flinch. She looked at Nathan not with anger, but with a chilling, profound indifference.

"You told me to sign the papers, Nathan," Clare said calmly, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard. "You said you wanted a clean break. You said you wanted to make sure my baby and I left with nothing."

Nathan swallowed hard, his voice dropping into a frantic, pleading whisper. "Clare, come on. That was... that was just a negotiation tactic! You know how stressful things are at the office! I was under pressure! We’ve been married for eight years—you can’t destroy everything we built because of a heated argument in a kitchen!"

"We didn't build this, Nathan," Clare replied, her eyes flashing with quiet fury. "You built a company. I built a home. And the moment you decided that my loyalty was a weakness and my pregnancy was an inconvenience, you tore it down yourself."

"Mr. Whitmore," Nathan stammered, finally turning his desperate gaze toward the silver-haired patriarch. "Sir, please. There’s been a massive misunderstanding. Clare and I are just having a domestic dispute—"

"A domestic dispute?" Edward interrupted, his voice cutting through the freezing air like a razor blade. "You threatened my daughter. You told her that you would leave her and my great-grandchild destitute with forty-eight hours notice. And then you walked out the door to spend your evening with your corporate strategy vice president, Victoria Hale."

Nathan’s face turned completely ashen. "How... how do you know about—"

"I own the financial world you play in, Mr. Caldwell," Edward said smoothly, stepping forward until he was towering directly over Nathan. "Did you really think a man who built an empire from a borrowed laptop could outsmart a family that has shaped global markets for a century? You climbed on my daughter’s shoulders, Nathan. And now gravity is catching up."
