Chapter 6 - THE COUP DE GRÂCEBefore Nathan could scrape together a coherent response, his cell phone began vibrating violently in his suit pocket. He pulled it out with a trembling hand. The screen flashed: VICTORIA HALE.

"Answer it," Edward commanded quietly. "Go ahead. Let’s hear what your precious executive vice president has to say now that the house of cards is collapsing."

Nathan swiped the screen and brought the phone to his ear, his voice shaking. "Victoria? What's happening?"

Victoria’s voice came through the speaker, frantic, screaming over the sound of shouting voices and slamming doors in the background.

"Nathan! Where are you?!" Victoria shrieked. "The board of directors just held an emergency teleconference! The institutional investors are pulling out en masse! And... and the SEC just served our office with a federal inquiry regarding our corporate spending and asset allocation!"

"An SEC inquiry?!" Nathan yelled, horror gripping his chest. "On what grounds?!"

"Embezzlement and fraudulent financial inflation!" Victoria cried hysterically. "They say our last three valuation rounds were backed by shell corporations linked to... linked to a Swiss trust called Whitmore Global! Nathan, we’re ruined! The police are in the lobby!"

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Nathan dropped his phone. It hit the marble steps with a dull thud, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of cracks.

He stood there in the freezing Chicago wind, completely broken. The billion-dollar valuation, the sleek glass headquarters, the arrogant confidence, the private dinners with Victoria—all of it had evaporated in less than twelve hours, dismantled effortlessly by the woman he had tried to throw out onto the street.

"Please," Nathan whispered, falling slowly to his knees on the cold stone, tears finally spilling over his lashes. "Clare... please. I was wrong. I was arrogant. I was blind. I love you. Please don't do this to us. Think of our son."

Clare looked down at the man who had once been her entire world. She felt no satisfaction, only a profound, liberating closure.

"My son will know a father who loves him," Clare said softly, stepping back toward the warmth of the mansion doors. "But he will never know a coward who measures his worth by how many people he can step on."

Edward placed a protective hand on his daughter’s shoulder, turning her gently away.

"Take him off the property, Marcus," Edward instructed the head of security without looking back. "And make sure the receivership team takes total control of Caldwell Innovations by sunrise."
