Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT INTRUDER AND THE WHISPER IN THE WINGThe grandfather clock in the grand hallway struck three in the morning with a deep, resonant chime that echoed through the empty corridors of Sterling Manor.

Elelliana wasn't sleeping. She sat upright in the center of the massive bed, listening. The wind outside had turned into a howling gale, shaking the thick windowpanes, but it wasn't the weather that had pulled her out of her dreams.

It was a sound downstairs—a soft, metallic click, followed by the faint scrape of a shoe on marble.

Years of surviving on the streets had taught Elelliana one absolute truth: when the world makes a noise in the dark, you do not call out; you become a shadow.

She slipped out of bed, her bare feet making no sound against the thick Persian rugs. She crept to the door, easing the brass handle down with agonizing slowness until the latch gave way with a breath of air.

The hallway was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of moonlight piercing through the high arched windows. As she crept toward the grand staircase that overlooked the foyer below, her breath caught in her throat.

Down in the foyer, three figures dressed head-to-toe in tactical black were moving with terrifying, silent efficiency. One of them held a specialized electronic device pressed against the heavy security keypad by the front door, bypassing the biometric locks with a series of frantic green flashes.

"The perimeter sensors are looped," a low, raspy voice hissed through a communications headset. "We have ten minutes before Sterling’s private security detail finishes their rotation from the eastern wing. Get to the master study. Find the ledger. And if the girl gets in the way... eliminate the variable."

Elelliana’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. They are here for Nathan. They are here for us.

She turned to run back to her room, to lock the door and wake Nathan, but her foot snagged on the edge of a decorative antique vase resting on a mahogany side table.

Clatter.

The sound was small, but in the dead silence of the manor, it sounded like a gunshot.

Downstairs, all three intruders froze instantly. Two of them spun around, raising silenced pistols toward the grand staircase, their night-vision goggles casting an eerie, emerald glare up into the darkness.

"Upstairs! Check the landing!"

Elelliana didn't hesitate. She bolted down the corridor, her bare feet pounding against the floorboards. She knew she couldn't outrun them, and she couldn't let them find the nursery where the twins were sleeping. With a burst of frantic adrenaline, she ducked into an open side door—a massive, dust-scented library filled with towering bookshelves—and slammed the door shut, locking it from the inside just as heavy boots hit the hallway floor outside.
