Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT THE CLIFFSIDE MANSIONBy four o'clock that afternoon, the fog rolling off the North Atlantic had grown thick enough to swallow the lower half of Sterling Manor.

A fleet of three unmarked black SUVs tore up the private winding drive, screeching to a halt outside the grand front entrance. Doors flew open, and a desperate, enraged Victor Thorne stepped out into the freezing wind, flanked by four remaining armed bodyguards. He had nothing left to lose. Stripped of his fortune, his company frozen by federal regulators, and his empire in ruins, he had come to the cliffside estate to finish the job himself.
"Break the doors!" Victor snarled, his face twisted with absolute fury.
Before his men could raise their crowbars, the heavy iron front doors of the manor swung open smoothly on their own.
Standing in the grand foyer was Nathan Sterling. He wasn't holding a weapon. He stood casually with his hands in the pockets of his dark coat, looking down at Victor with an expression of profound, chilling indifference.
"Welcome to my home, Victor," Nathan said, his voice echoing smoothly through the stone hall. "You look like you've had a rough afternoon."
Victor’s eyes bulged with murderous rage. He drew a heavy nickel-plated pistol from his shoulder holster, leveling it squarely at Nathan’s chest.
"You ruined me, Nathan!" Victor shrieked, spittle flying from his lips. "Ten years of work! Gone in thirty seconds! I’m going to put a bullet through your heart, and then I’m going to burn this entire mausoleum to the ground!"
Nathan didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. "You built your empire on stolen pensions and human misery, Victor. I simply accelerated your eviction notice."
"Move, Nathan! Move, and I'll spare the brat!" Victor yelled, gesturing wildly toward the staircase.
From the top of the grand marble staircase, a small, steady voice cut through the cold air.
"He's not moving."
Victor snapped his head upward. Standing on the landing, wrapped in her cream-colored sweater, stood Elelliana. Her chin was held high, her eyes completely devoid of the terror she had felt yesterday in the grocery store. Behind her stood Marcus, holding the hunting rifle casually across his forearm, while two federal marshals in tactical armor emerged from the shadows behind Victor, their weapons locked directly on the disgraced CEO.
"Federal Agents! Drop your weapon, Victor Thorne! You're surrounded!"
Victor spun around, realizing too late that the entire driveway had been blocked by federal transport vehicles that had slipped up the access road unnoticed under the cover of the thick coastal fog.
He raised his gun in a desperate, suicidal motion toward the stairs—toward Elelliana.
Bang.
A single shot rang out. Marcus’s rifle kicked back against his shoulder. The bullet grazed the concrete wall a millimeter from Victor’s hand, shocking the gun loose from his fingers. It clattered loudly across the marble floor.
Within seconds, the federal marshals swarmed forward, slamming Victor face-first onto the stone floor and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him away, screaming obscenities into the cold air, Victor glared back at Nathan with pure venom. "You think you've won, Sterling? She’s a liability! A stray dog you dragged off the street! She'll only drag you down!"
Nathan watched him disappear through the doors, his expression softening only when he turned his gaze back to the grand staircase.
