Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the FostersThe aftermath of the live stream was catastrophic for Caleb and Patricia.

Within twenty-four hours, the story went viral nationwide. Local news outlets picked up the saga of the "Paycheck In-Laws." Caleb became a national laughingstock. He couldn't walk into a local coffee shop without people recognizing him as the man who tried to steal his wife's paycheck for his mother.
The financial pressure on Patricia reached a breaking point.
Because of the public exposure, Patricia’s creditors realized she had no impending influx of money from her son's wealthy wife. They immediately moved to foreclose on her suburban home and freeze her remaining assets.
On Friday afternoon, my attorney called me.
"Clara, Caleb’s lawyer just called. They are desperate. Caleb is facing criminal indictment for attempted bank fraud due to the forged HELOC application. They want to make a deal."
"What kind of deal?" I asked, looking out over the city skyline from my balcony.
"He will sign the annulment without contesting a single line, surrender all claims to any property, and issue a public apology video... if you agree to drop the criminal complaints regarding the forged loan document and the trespassing charges against his mother."
I took a sip of my tea.
"Tell them no," I said flatly.
"Clara, if you go to trial, it will take months of legal headache," my lawyer warned gently.
"I don't care," I replied. "They tried to ruin my life, my financial standing, and my career without a second thought. They didn't offer me mercy when they stood in my kitchen handing me a list of expectations. They get zero mercy from me."
An hour later, my doorbell rang.
I looked at my security monitor. It was Caleb.
He didn't look like the polished, handsome man I had walked down the aisle with two weeks ago. His suit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and his eyes were bloodshot.
I didn't open the door. I pressed the intercom button.
"You have five seconds to turn around, Caleb."
"Clara! Please!" his voice cracked over the speaker. "Please, just hear me out! Mom is losing the house! The bank is taking everything! I could go to prison for that loan application! I was desperate, Clara! I loved you, I really did, but Mom was pressuring me every day! She told me if I didn't get control of your money, she’d be ruined!"
"You chose her over your own integrity, Caleb," I said coldly. "You thought you could break me to fix her mistakes."
"I’ll do anything!" he sobbed against the door. "I’ll sign whatever you want! I’ll cut Mom off completely! Just please don't let them put me in jail!"

"It's too late, Caleb. You made your bed. Now you get to sleep in it. Beside your mother."
I disconnected the intercom and turned off the chime.
