Chapter 8 - The Final Twist and The New RulesThe room went dead silent.

Patricia looked like she had been hit by a freight train. "W-what are you talking about?"
"I bought your mortgage debt three weeks ago through an LLC," I said, leaning in so only she and Caleb could hear. "I owned your home before the auction even started today. The auction was just a legal formality to finalize the eviction."
Caleb fell back against the wooden courtroom railing, looking like he was going to vomit. "Clara... please..."
"You two thought you were playing a game of power," I said, pulling a folded sheet of paper from my purse—the exact same piece of paper Patricia had handed me in my kitchen weeks ago, which I had retrieved from the trash.
I unfolded it and held it up.
"I made a few modifications to your list of rules," I said calmly.
I handed the paper to Patricia.
Across the top, in bold ink, it read: EVICTION EXPECTATIONS FOR PATRICIA AND CALEB FOSTER.
Rule 1: Vacate the premises within twenty-four hours.
Rule 2: Leave all appliances and fixtures intact, or face immediate criminal property damage charges.
Rule 3: Do not contact, approach, or speak the name of Clara Vance ever again.
Rule 4: Pay your own bills.
Patricia trembled, holding the paper as tears of humiliation rolled down her face. The entire family legacy she had tried to protect, the control she had tried to exert, and the wealth she had tried to steal had evaporated completely—transferred directly into the hands of the woman she had tried to subjugate over a plate of breakfast.
"You ruined us," Patricia whispered, her voice breaking.
"No, Patricia," I replied, pulling my sunglasses back up over my eyes. "You ruined yourselves the moment you assumed a woman's kindness was a sign of weakness."
I turned on my heel and walked out of the courtroom, the crisp sound of my high heels echoing down the marble hallway.
Six months later.
I sat on the balcony of my condo, watching the sunset over the city skyline. The air was crisp, the coffee in my hand was perfect, and the quiet was divine.
My phone buzzed on the table. It was a notification from my bank app:
