Chapter 3 - THE DEEP STATE OF WHISPERING PINESBack at the Whispering Pines subdivision, the streetlights flickered on as dusk settled over the manicured lawns. But beneath the neighborhood's pristine exterior, a monstrous conspiracy was unraveling.

Detective Marcus Vance stepped out of Robert's home, sliding a heavy, encrypted USB flash drive into his tactical vest pocket. He walked briskly down the driveway and climbed into his unmarked cruiser.

Waiting for him on the passenger seat was a burner phone. It lit up the dark cabin with an incoming call. Marcus swiped to answer.

"Is it secured?" a distorted voice asked through the speaker.

"Got it, Judge," Marcus replied, keeping his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. "The drive is in my possession. But Robert is going to know it's missing the second he checks his security logs."

"Let him check," Judge Thomas Holloway’s voice purred from the other end. "By the time he gets back to the precinct, the internal affairs report will already be filed. We aren't just going to discredit the sheriff, Marcus. We are going to dismantle his entire life, brick by brick. The syndicate cannot afford any loose ends—especially not a curious eight-year-old girl with a digital audio recorder."

Marcus looked out the windshield toward the horizon, where the neon lights of the county courthouse cast an ominous glow against the night sky. For nineteen years, he had worn the badge with pride. But tonight, he realized the badge was nothing more than a leash held by monsters in expensive suits.

"What about Diana?" Marcus asked.

"Diana has served her purpose," the Judge replied coldly. "She was the distraction. The lightning rod. Now comes the real storm."

The line went dead. Marcus stared at the phone for a long moment, then slowly reached down and drew his service weapon, sliding the slide back to check the chamber. A dangerous thought crossed his mind: If the syndicate is planning to burn everyone, maybe it’s time to start throwing matches of my own.
