Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT AUTOPSYMidnight at the county morgue was a place where secrets went to die—unless someone was willing to exhume them.

Robert Ramirez stood in the blinding fluorescent light of the autopsy suite, his service revolver resting heavily on the stainless steel counter. He wasn't waiting for a coroner. He was waiting for forensic computer analyst Toby Chen, the only civilian tech expert in the county who wasn't on Judge Holloway’s payroll.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Toby rushed in, carrying a bulky portable forensic rig.

"Sheriff, you're not going to believe this," Toby panted, setting his laptop down and frantically typing commands. "I hacked into the county dispatch logs from three days ago—the exact day Emma found that broken flowerpot on her porch."

"Talk to me, Toby. What did she record?" Robert demanded, leaning over the console.

Toby turned the screen toward the sheriff. On it was an audio waveform, jagged and chaotic.

"It wasn't a flowerpot accident, Robert. Diana Harrington didn't plant that pot there because it violated HOA bylaws. She planted it to cover up a drop-off," Toby explained, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Look at the timestamp. Three days ago, at 2:14 AM, a black-ops logistics truck backed into the cul-de-sac. They were unloading cargo from the county's juvenile detention expansion fund—funds that were supposed to build a youth center, but were actually being funneled into a private human trafficking ring run out of the Whispering Pines basement fallout shelters."

Robert stared at the screen, the room spinning around him. Whispering Pines wasn't just an elite suburban community. It was a laundering front for the most powerful crime syndicate in Texas.

"And Emma?" Robert whispered, his voice cracking with pure agony. "Where does she fit into this?"

Toby swallowed hard, clicking on a secondary audio file. "She didn't just record the delivery, Sheriff. Her smart watch was pinging a live audio feed to her tablet while she was playing hide-and-seek behind the community center. She captured the voice of the man coordinating the entire operation."

Toby hit play.

Through the tinny laptop speakers, a voice crackled through the static—smooth, authoritative, and unmistakable. It was a voice Robert heard every single Monday morning during executive county briefings.

It was Judge Thomas Holloway.
