Chapter 10 - The Unbroken FutureSpring returned to Greenwich with an explosion of green shoots, blooming dogwoods, and warm April sunshine that washed the grand facade of the Mercer estate in brilliant golden light.

The trial of Claire Whitmore had concluded quietly behind closed doors two weeks prior. Facing insurmountable evidence of filing a false police report, grand larceny regarding the stolen porcelain shard, and attempted witness tampering, Claire’s high-priced legal team had negotiated a plea deal: probation, mandatory community service, and a permanent restraining order keeping her at least five hundred miles away from the Mercer property and its residents.

The tabloids had their moment of sensationalism, but the world moved on quickly.

Inside the mansion, however, life was sweeter than ever.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the circular driveway was filled with bicycles, chalk drawings on the pavement, and the sound of children laughing.

Natalie stood on the front steps, wearing a breezy summer dress, holding a fresh pitcher of lemonade. Her hair caught the afternoon breeze, and the silver locket gleamed brightly against her chest in the sunlight.

Down on the lawn, Grant was squatting on the grass, helping Lily build an impossibly tall tower out of wooden blocks.

"Higher, Mr. Grant!" Lily demanded, her pink dress fluttering in the wind as she clapped her small hands together. "Make it touch the sky!"

"If I make it any higher, architectural laws of physics will sue us," Grant laughed, carefully placing a final block on top of the leaning tower.

Ben and Sophie ran past, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Grant had finally agreed to adopt for the kids.

Evelyn walked out onto the front steps beside Natalie, carrying a tray of cookies. The veteran house manager adjusted her glasses, looking out over the vibrant, chaotic, beautiful scene on the lawn.

"You know, Natalie," Evelyn remarked with a dry, affectionate smile. "For a house that started the year with broken pottery and flashing police lights... it cleans up remarkably well."

Natalie smiled, leaning against the stone pillar. She looked down at Lily, who was currently laughing hysterically as the puppy licked her cheek, and then across the lawn to Grant, who looked up, caught her eye, and gave her a slow, loving smile that promised forever.

"It wasn't the house that needed fixing, Evelyn," Natalie said softly, resting a hand over her heart. "It was the people inside it."

And as the afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the Greenwich estate, the Mercer family stood unbroken, bound together not by wealth or status, but by truth, courage, and four small words that changed their world forever.
