Chapter 8 - A New FoundationLife at the Mercer mansion underwent a radical transformation over the next three months.

With Claire and the Whitmore influence permanently excised from their lives, the cavernous estate began to feel less like a cold museum and more like a real home. The heavy velvet drapes in the sitting rooms were drawn back to let in the bright winter sunlight. Owen, the chef, started teaching Ben and Sophie how to bake cookies in the oversized kitchen, with Lily sitting in a high chair acting as the official "taste tester."

Natalie stepped smoothly into her new role as the estate’s operations manager. Her efficiency, combined with her genuine warmth, transformed the household staff from a collection of isolated employees into a tight-knit family.

Grant found himself spending less time locked away in his corporate office downtown and more time walking the Greenwich grounds with his children—and frequently, with Natalie and Lily by his side.

One snowy evening in December, the household was decorating the massive Christmas tree in the grand salon.

Classic holiday music played softly from the speakers. Ben and Sophie were busy hanging glittering glass ornaments on the lower branches, while Lily sat on a velvet ottoman wrapped in a red flannel blanket, clapping her hands every time a red bulb caught the light.

Natalie stood on a step-stool near the top of the tree, trying to secure a silver star.

The stool wobbled slightly.

Natalie lost her footing. "Oh!"

Before she could hit the floor, strong arms caught her around the waist, lifting her safely down.

Grant stood right behind her, his hands lingering on her waist for a fraction of a second longer than necessary before he let go.

"Careful," Grant smiled, his dark eyes warm. "We can't have our chief operations manager taking worker's comp right before the holidays."

Natalie’s cheeks flushed a soft, rosy pink. "Thank you. I thought I had it balanced."

"You never do things halfway," Grant noted quietly, handing her the silver star. "You carry the weight of the whole house on your shoulders."

"I like it here," Natalie confessed, looking up at him. "It feels... safe."

"It is safe," Grant said, his voice dropping into a deeper, more intimate register. "And I want to keep it that way. Permanently."

Across the room, Sophie paused in her ornament-hanging, nudged Ben, and whispered something in his ear. Ben grinned widely, nodding in silent approval.

Just then, the front doorbell chimed—a soft, melodic ring entirely different from the harsh knocks of the past.

Evelyn walked in from the hallway holding a small, elegantly wrapped package delivered by a courier. She took one look at Grant and Natalie standing close together by the tree, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

"A delivery for you, Mr. Mercer," Evelyn announced dryly. "From a local ceramic restoration studio in New York."

Grant frowned slightly. "Restoration studio?"

He took the package, cut the tape with his car key, and pulled back the tissue paper.

Inside lay his mother’s Portuguese ceramic bowl.

The master restorer had used the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi—repairing the cracks with powdered gold. Where the jagged lines of blue vines had once been shattered by Ben’s elbow, brilliant veins of gold now held the porcelain together, making the bowl infinitely more beautiful, stronger, and more precious than it had ever been before.

Grant stared at it in stunned silence.

He ran his thumb gently across the golden seams. They weren't hiding the damage; they were celebrating the survival.

He looked up at Natalie.

She smiled, her brown eyes shining with unshed tears as she understood the profound metaphor resting in his hands.
