Chapter 6 - Shadows from the PastTwo weeks after Claire’s arrest, the legal dust began to settle, but the ripples reached far beyond the gates of the Greenwich estate.

Claire Whitmore was out on bail, hiding out in her family’s sprawling estate in Newport, Rhode Island, nursing a burning, psychotic hatred for everyone who had brought down her social standing. To Claire, the arrest wasn't her fault; it was a conspiracy orchestrated by a low-class maid and an absentee billionaire who didn't appreciate her sacrifices.

She wasn't planning to go quietly.

On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, while Grant was downtown at Mercer Digital headquarters closing a massive merger, a sleek black sedan pulled up unannounced to the front gates of the Mercer mansion.

Inside the car sat Richard Whitmore—Claire’s father, a ruthless hedge fund manager whose wealth and influence rivaled Grant’s.

Richard did not ring the front doorbell. Instead, he stepped out of the vehicle, flashed his corporate badge at the gate security intercom, and demanded entry under the guise of "retrieving personal property left behind by my daughter."

Evelyn Carter was the one who answered the door.

She took one look at Richard Whitmore’s cold, patrician face and felt her stomach drop.

"Mr. Whitmore," Evelyn said, keeping her posture rigid as she blocked the threshold. "You have no business here. All of Miss Whitmore’s personal belongings were shipped to her family's legal counsel last week."

"Step aside, housekeeper," Richard said, his voice dripping with venomous condescension as he shoved past her into the grand foyer. "I’m not here for dresses or shoes. I’m here to inspect the environment where my daughter was publicly humiliated by a common domestic."

Natalie, who was walking down the stairs with a stack of fresh towels, froze when she heard the booming voice echo through the hall.

Lily, trailing a step behind her mother, peeked over the banister.

Richard spotted Natalie immediately. His eyes narrowed with pure classist disdain as he marched toward the foot of the stairs.

"Ah. The maid," Richard sneered, looking Natalie up and down as if she were a piece of dirt on his shoe. "You think you won, don't you? You think a temporary scandal is going to ruin our family name? My daughter is a Whitmore. Grant Mercer will be begging for her forgiveness before the month is out."

"Mr. Whitmore, I suggest you leave right now before I call security and the police," Evelyn warned, stepping up beside Natalie.

"Call them!" Richard laughed harshly. "Let's see how much the cops care when I file a counter-suit against this estate for defamation and harassment. And as for this little parasite..." He pointed a manicured finger directly at three-year-old Lily. "...she and her mother won't last another twenty-four hours in this house. I'll make sure Grant fires you both before dinner."

Natalie’s hands shook, not from fear, but from a sudden, fierce surge of adrenaline. She stepped in front of Lily, shielding her daughter entirely. "Get out of this house."

"Or what?" Richard sneered, stepping closer, towering over Natalie. "You'll clean my shoes?"

Before Richard could finish his sentence, the heavy oak front door swung open with a crash.

Grant Mercer stood in the doorway.

His suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened, and his eyes burned with a cold, terrifying fury that made even a seasoned Wall Street predator like Richard Whitmore take an involuntary step backward.

"Get out of my house, Richard," Grant’s voice dropped to a lethal whisper that shook the glass in the front windows.
