Chapter 2 - The Crimson Alibi

Down in the east wing’s grand parlor, the fireplace cast long, dancing shadows across the velvet walls. Madeline Vale paced across the floor, a glass of vintage champagne shaking slightly in her manicured hand. The lockdown order had hit the estate ten minutes ago. Armed guards stood outside her doors, blocking every exit.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Victor Romano walked in, his clothes still damp from the rain, his right hand wrapped neatly in a fresh white bandage where the whiskey glass had sliced his skin.

“Victor!” Madeline rushed forward, pasting a look of fragile concern onto her face. “Thank God. What is the meaning of this lockdown? Your guards are terrifying the staff. And that woman—that criminal you hired—she’s been locked in Leo’s room causing chaos—”

“Shut up, Madeline,” Victor said quietly.

Madeline froze, her breath catching in her throat. “Excuse me?”

Victor crossed the room in three strides, stopping just inches from her. He didn't raise his voice, but the terrifying aura of a mafia king filled the room, choking out the oxygen.

“Where were you at six o'clock this evening?” Victor asked.

“I—I was in my dressing room! Having my hair styled for the charity gala tomorrow!” Madeline stammered, her composure cracking for a split second.

“My kitchen staff says you personally supervised the preparation of Leo’s evening meal,” Victor said, his eyes drilling into her soul. “You added a special ingredient. A custom-blended sedative that doesn't show up on standard hospital panels, but reacts instantly to a chemical testing agent.”

Madeline’s face drained of color. She forced a harsh, defensive laugh, stepping back. “Are you seriously listening to a disgraced, criminal nurse over your own future wife? She’s trying to frame me! She wants my place in this house, Victor! She’s a thief—”

“She didn't steal anything,” Victor interrupted coldly, pulling a small tablet from his coat. He tapped the screen and spun it around.

The screen displayed high-definition security footage from the private pantry adjacent to the kitchen. It showed Madeline standing over Leo’s tray, pulling a small dropper from her designer handbag and carefully metering a clear liquid into the orange soup before stirring it with a silver spoon.

The room went dead silent.

Madeline stared at the tablet, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The mask had completely shattered, revealing the panicked, calculating predator underneath.

“You... you hacked the private cameras,” she whispered, trembling.

“Every square inch of this house belongs to me, Madeline,” Victor said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “Including the air you breathe. You thought you could slowly kill my son, make it look like his body was failing him, and inherit a share of the Romano empire when his heart finally gave out.”

Madeline’s eyes darted frantically toward the door, calculating her odds against the armed guards stationed outside. Realizing there was no escape, her expression twisted from fear into pure, venomous hatred.

“And what if I did?!” Madeline shrieked, dropping the act entirely. She slammed her champagne glass against the hearth, shattering it into a million glittering pieces. “That vegetable will never inherit anything! He’s broken, Victor! Just like his dead mother! I was doing you a favor—clearing the path so we could build a real empire together! Without a weakling holding you back!”

Before the echo of her words could fade, Victor’s hand shot out like lightning.

He caught her by the throat, lifting her effortlessly off the floor as she clawed desperately at his iron grip. His face was a mask of cold, unmitigated fury.

“You touch my son,” Victor hissed, his voice echoing off the stone walls, “and you answer to me. But death is too merciful for what you’re going to get.”

He tossed her violently across the room. Madeline crashed against the mahogany table, gasping for air, clutching her bruised neck as two guards marched into the room, subduing her instantly.

“Take her to the lower vault,” Victor ordered without looking back. “Nobody feeds her. Nobody speaks to her. Let her think about what happens when you bite the hand that feeds you.”
