Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

The rain returned by Friday evening, battering the reinforced glass of the Romano estate like handfuls of gravel. Inside the warm, softly lit nursery, Nora was reading a brightly colored storybook to Leo, who was propped up against a pile of plush pillows.

“And then,” Nora read with an exaggerated voice, “the brave knight stood at the castle gates, refusing to let the shadow monsters pass!”

Leo giggled softly, a sound that still made Nora’s heart melt every time she heard it. “Did the knight have a sword, Nora?”

“He didn't need a sword,” Nora smiled, brushing a lock of hair from his forehead. “He had courage. And sometimes, that’s much stronger.”

The bedroom door clicked open, and Victor walked in. He had changed out of his usual tailored suit into a dark tactical turtleneck, a heavy leather holster strapped securely across his chest. Despite the invisible war brewing outside, his expression softened the moment he looked at his son.

“How is the knight holding up?” Victor asked, walking over to the bed and resting a large hand gently on Leo’s shoulder.

“We’re winning, Dad,” Leo said proudly, looking up at his father with absolute adoration.

Victor smiled faintly, though his dark eyes flicked toward Nora, carrying a silent message. He gestured slightly toward the hallway, asking her to step outside for a moment. Nora gently handed the book to Leo, told him she’d be right back, and slipped out into the corridor.

The hallway was quiet, lit only by the amber glow of wall sconces. Victor stood near the window, staring out into the stormy courtyard where armed guards patrolled the perimeter in tactical gear.

“What’s wrong?” Nora asked immediately, sensing the heavy tension in the air. “Is it Leo?”

“Leo is safe,” Victor said, turning to face her. His gaze was intense, scanning her face as if memorizing every detail. “The perimeter is locked down. Every guard is on high alert.”

“Victor, you haven't slept in two days,” Nora said, stepping closer, her voice laced with genuine concern. “Whatever business crisis you’re dealing with—you don't have to carry it all alone. You taught me that.”

Victor let out a low, humorless breath. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against her cheek. Nora’s breath caught in her throat, her skin tingling at the sudden, intimate contact.

“It’s not just a business crisis, Nora,” Victor murmured, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. “The people Madeline worked for... the Vanguard Cartel... they know about you. They know you saved Leo. They’ve made you a target.”

Nora froze. The reality of her position crashed down on her. She wasn't just a disgraced former nurse anymore; she was standing in the epicenter of a mafia war. But looking into Victor’s dark, unwavering eyes, she didn't feel the paralyzing fear she expected.

“Then I’ll stay right here behind your gates,” Nora said quietly, not stepping away from his touch.

“They won't just wait outside the gates,” Victor said, his jaw tightening. “Which is why I’m sending you away tonight.”

Nora’s eyes widened in shock. “What? No! I’m not leaving Leo! After everything we’ve built, I’m not running away—”

“Listen to me,” Victor interrupted, his grip on her cheek tightening just enough to command absolute attention, though his touch remained fiercely gentle. “A private armored convoy is waiting in the subterranean garage. Maddox will take you and Leo to our safehouse in the northern mountains. It’s impenetrable. Once you’re safe, I’ll finish this war on my own terms.”

“And what happens to you?” Nora demanded, her voice rising with fierce emotion. “You expect me to sit in some mountain cabin while you walk into a slaughterhouse alone? Is that how this works, Victor? You protect everyone else while you bleed out in the dark?”

Before Victor could answer, the entire mansion shuddered violently.

The lights flickered, buzzing loudly before plunging the entire hallway into pitch-black darkness. Emergency red backup beacons whirred to life, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the stone walls.

From the courtyard below, the sharp, deafening rattle of automatic gunfire ripped through the storm.
