Chapter 7 - The Empire Rebuilt

Three months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the Hamptons.
The sprawling, seaside estate that had once belonged to the Kingsley family—the very estate where Arthur and Grant had plotted their social dominance—now bore a new nameplate at the front gates: The Moretti-Kingsley Foundation for Maternal Health and Reproductive Rights.
Following the collapse of Kingsley Industries, Arthur Kingsley had quietly stepped down from public life, selling off the remaining assets to avoid a sweeping federal investigation into corporate fraud and medical bribery. Grant had been sentenced to eighteen months probation and community service for harassment and conspiracy, his name permanently blackened from high society. Sienna had fled the country for Europe, her social media accounts deleted, her dreams of wealth reduced to ash.
And me?
I sat on the white veranda overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, cradling a laughing, bright-eyed four-month-old Chloe in my arms. She had Dominic’s striking dark eyes and my nose, a perfect blend of our hard-fought survival.
Footsteps sounded behind me, followed by the familiar, comforting scent of cedar and expensive cologne. Two strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, broad chest.
“Penny for your thoughts,” Dominic whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck.
I leaned back into him, smiling as Chloe reached out tiny hands to grab at his tie. “I was just thinking about the day at the hospital. When your phone started ringing.”
Dominic chuckled, a rich, deep sound that vibrated through me. “Best phone call of my life. Though I must admit, watching you destroy Grant on speakerphone was a close second.”
“You didn't think I was too ruthless?” I teased, turning my head to look up at him.
“Ruthless?” Dominic raised an eyebrow, his eyes sparkling with amusement and fierce adoration. “You were merciful. If it were up to me, Grant would be scrubbing subway cars for the rest of his natural life.”
I laughed, setting Chloe down on the plush outdoor play mat where she immediately began babbling happily at a stuffed plush bear. I turned around in Dominic’s arms, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“So,” I said softly. “What happens now? No board meetings to sabotage, no ex-husbands to fight, no tabloids chasing us.”
Dominic’s expression softened, all the cold, ruthless tycoon melting away, leaving only the man who had sat beside my hospital bed and asked me if I was scared. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, elegant velvet box.
My breath hitched.
“Now,” Dominic said quietly, his voice thick with emotion, “we start our actual life. Together. No secrets, no fear, just us.”
He opened the box. Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a rare pink diamond flanked by two brilliant white stones—representing the three of us.
“Claire,” Dominic whispered, dropping smoothly to one knee right there on the veranda, with the ocean breeze in our hair and our daughter laughing at our feet. “Will you marry me and let me spend the rest of my days making sure you never have to look back?”

Tears welled in my eyes, but this time, there was no fear, no hesitation, and no pain. Just an overwhelming, blinding wave of joy.
“Yes,” I whispered, pulling him up into my arms as the ocean waves crashed against the shore below. “Yes, a million times yes.”
