Chapter 7 - The Midnight Raid on the EliteThe digital clock on the dashboard of the tactical van glowed 02:15 AM.

Outside, the rain was coming down in sheets, turning the streets of the city's most exclusive gated hill community into slick, black mirrors. Mansions worth twenty million dollars each sat behind wrought-iron fences, their security lights cutting through the downpour. Tonight, those lights meant nothing.
Kael sat in the passenger seat, his fingers flying across a ruggedized laptop. "Perimeter breach complete on the residence of Arthur Sterling—Elena’s father. Security guards neutralized without a shot fired. The house is completely dark."
I sat in the back, wearing a black tactical turtleneck, checking the magazine of my suppressed sidearm before sliding it into my thigh holster. Mia was safe, tucked away in a secure safehouse ten miles away under the watchful eye of our most trusted nanny and a squad of elite operatives.
Now, it was time for the architects of cruelty to pay their tab.
"Move in," I commanded.
Three black SUVs rolled silently up the winding driveway of the Sterling estate, their lights extinguished. Within seconds, twelve operatives in charcoal tactical gear swarmed the grand double doors of the mansion. There was no battering ram needed; Kael’s digital bypass unlocked the smart-lock system in less than three seconds.
The heavy doors hissed open. We stepped into a foyer dripping with crystal chandeliers, expensive European art, and marble floors that mirrored our dark silhouettes.
"Clear the ground floor," Kael muttered into his comm.
I walked straight toward the grand staircase, my boots making no sound on the plush Persian carpet. Upstairs, in the master suite, Senator Arthur Sterling was sleeping soundly, completely unaware that his global empire of corruption had imploded while he dreamed of his upcoming reelection campaign.
I pushed the master bedroom door open.
The room smelled of expensive cologne and expensive linen. Arthur sat up abruptly in his king-sized bed, blinking against the sudden glare of my tactical flashlight beam slicing across his face.
"What—who the hell are you?!" Arthur choked out, shielding his eyes with a manicured hand. "Guards! Security!"
"Your guards are currently taking a very peaceful nap in the courtyard, Senator," I said, stepping out of the shadows and into the sliver of light coming from the hallway.
Arthur squinted, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes adjusted. Recognition flickered across his sagging, arrogant face, turning into sheer horror.
"Vance...? You... you're the clockmaker. The domestic..."
"The shadow husband," I finished for him, walking to the edge of the bed and resting my hands on the mahogany bedpost. "The man you and your daughter laughed at during Sunday dinners. The man you called a peasant behind his back while you used his clean slate to fund your political campaigns."
Arthur scrambled backward against the headboard, his face turning pale. "Listen to me... whatever Elena did, whatever money you think we took—we can negotiate. I have connections at the highest levels of the Department of Justice. I can get you diplomatic immunity, citizenship anywhere in the world—"
"You think I care about money?" I interrupted, my voice as cold as a glacier. "You think I want your corrupt political titles?"
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, framed photograph—a picture of Mia, smiling in her pink dress, holding a small wooden clock I had carved for her fifth birthday. I placed it gently on the center of his silk pillow, right next to his head.
"This is what you and Elena traded for your social status," I whispered. "You starved her. You treated her like a burden in her own home. And for five years, I let you believe you were the masters of this city."
Arthur was shaking now, sweat beading on his forehead. "What do you want...? Name your price. Anything!"
"My price," I said, leaning down until my face was inches from his, "is everything you built. Every offshore account, every shell company, every piece of real estate, every political endorsement. By 06:00 AM, the media will receive the complete unedited archive of your corruption, your bribes, and your family's financial crimes."
"You'll destroy us!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria. "We'll go to federal prison for the rest of our lives!"
"Prison?" I stood up straight, adjusting my cuffs. "Prison is too kind for parasites like you. You're going to experience what it feels like to have absolute nothingness—just like you forced my daughter to feel every time you locked her away."
I turned toward the door. Kael was standing in the doorway, holding a secure satellite phone.
"Boss," Kael said grimly. "We have a problem at the main estate. Elena broke through the makeshift holding cell. She somehow got her hands on a burner phone and contacted the highest-ranking enforcement official in the state—and she’s bringing an entire tactical strike team to raid our home."

I paused, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across my face.
"Good," I murmured, turning back toward the hallway. "Let them come. It saves us the trouble of hunting them down one by one."
