Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a BetrayalThe silence in the room was absolute, heavy enough to crush lungs. Elena stared at the speaker as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. The audio loop finished, clicked, and replayed the first two words—“Just lock her...”—before I tapped the screen again to cut it off.

"Where..." Elena’s voice was a dry, raspy whisper, stripped of all its practiced haughtiness. "Where did you get that?"

"You always were careless with your encryption keys, Elena," I said, walking slowly toward her, closing the distance step by methodical step. "You thought because I spent my days bent over Swiss movements and gears, I didn't understand code. You forgot that before I built clocks, I built the networks that tracked every financial transaction and wiretap across the Western Hemisphere."

She stumbled back half a step, her heel catching on the edge of the rug. Kael stepped up silently behind her, blocking any retreat, his tactical vest brushing against her trench coat. She didn't dare turn around to look at him.

"Vance, listen to me," she stammered, her hands trembling as she reached out in a pathetic gesture of appeasement. "It was... it was out of context. Rachel manipulated me. You know how stressful the foundation galas are, how much pressure my family puts on me to maintain appearances—"

"Appearances," I repeated, tasting the word like poison.

I stopped two feet away from her. Up close, I could see the tiny micro-lines of botox around her eyes, the expensive foundation trying to hide the exhaustion of a double life.

"Five years ago, you walked into my repair shop in Zurich," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "You were running from a blood debt your father had incurred with the Marseille syndicate. I wiped the ledger clean. I gave you my name, my protection, and a clean slate. I even walked away from my empire so you could play at being a society matriarch."

"You... you were just a clockmaker," she breathed, her eyes widening in a sudden, terrifying realization. "The man in Zurich... the one they called L'Horloger de la Mort... people said he vanished after the purge..."

"I didn't vanish," I said, my lips parting in a cold, humorless smile. "I retired. For Mia. I traded my guns for magnifying lenses and tweezers. I taught myself how to bake birthday cakes and mend torn teddy bears. I learned how to be invisible."

I leaned in closer, my voice dropping to a low, glacial register that made Kael shift uncomfortably by the door.

"And you decided to starve my daughter because her existence was an inconvenience to your social calendar."

"She is my daughter too!" Elena shrieked, the mask finally cracking into a feral display of desperation. "I gave birth to her! I can do whatever I want with her! You can't touch me—my father’s associates are dining with the federal prosecutor tonight! If anything happens to me, a hundred armed men will storm this house and tear you—"

"Your father’s associates?" I interrupted softly. "You mean Senator Sterling? Or perhaps Director Vance of the SEC?"

I turned to Kael. "Status on the Sterling family holdings?"

Kael flipped his tablet, his face expressionless. "Frozen thirty-four minutes ago, Boss. All offshore accounts in the Caymans and Zurich have been seized under emergency asset-forfeiture protocols initiated by our shell companies. By midnight, your father-in-law won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee."

Elena clutched her chest, staggering backward until she hit the back of the sofa, collapsing onto the cushions next to Chloe and Veronica. The three women looked like inmates in a holding cell awaiting their executioner.

"You're ruined, Elena," I said, turning my back on her to walk toward the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the dark cul-de-sac. "Your money is gone. Your family name is mud. And your freedom... well, that belongs entirely to me now."

Just then, a soft chime interrupted the tension. It wasn't a phone call. It was the intercom system linked to the front gate.

Kael tapped his wrist comm. "Boss, we have an uninvited guest at the main security barrier. A black Lincoln Navigator. Plates are diplomatic, registered to the European Union embassy. They're demanding immediate entry for a Mr. Viktor Vance—your older brother."

May you like

I paused, staring out at the dark horizon. Viktor. The man who had tried to take over the syndicate five years ago when I walked away.

"Let him in," I murmured. "It's time the family reunion began."
