Chapter 5 - The Prodigal ShadowThe heavy iron gates of the estate swung open with a slow, grinding groan that sounded like a mechanical beast clearing its throat. The black Lincoln Navigator rolled up the sweeping paved drive, its headlights cutting twin white arcs through the thick fog drifting in from the coast.

Inside the living room, the atmosphere shifted from tense to explosive. Elena looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope flashing in her ruined eyes.

"Viktor?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "You called Viktor? Vance, you idiot, Viktor hates you! He’s been hunting you for years to reclaim the throne!"

I didn't answer her. I stood by the fireplace, my hands resting calmly in my pockets, watching the Navigator's doors open. Two men in immaculate gray suits stepped out first, scanning the perimeter with cold, professional efficiency. Then, the rear door swung open, and Viktor stepped out into the night air.

He looked older, his silver hair slicked back with military precision, wearing a tailored cashmere overcoat that cost more than a small car. A thin, jagged scar ran from behind his left ear down to his collarbone—a souvenir from the last time we disagreed on how to run the underworld.

The front door opened without a knock. Viktor walked in, his polished leather shoes clicking against the marble. He didn't look at Rachel, or Chloe, or Veronica. He didn't even look at Elena, who was practically shrinking into the sofa cushions. His eyes locked entirely on me.

"Well, well, little brother," Viktor said, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. "For five years, half the intelligence agencies and syndicates in the world tore themselves apart looking for The Sovereign. And all this time, you were playing house in the suburbs, fixing cuckoo clocks and changing diapers."

He stopped ten feet away, his gaze sweeping over the tactical operatives standing by the exits.

"You look soft, Vance," Viktor continued, his tone dripping with arrogant amusement. "Too much domestic peace. You think you can just snap your fingers and summon the Black House protocol like the old days? You’ve been out of the game too long."

I walked slowly toward him, my expression unreadable. "Is that why you came all the way from Geneva, Viktor? To check if my screwdrivers are still sharp?"

Viktor chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that lacked any warmth. "I came because when the global banking network froze my primary accounts forty minutes ago, only one man on Earth has the master encryption key to bypass my firewall. You."

He took another step closer, his eyes narrowing. "You think because you rescued your bratty little kid from a locked basement, you're back on top? The syndicates in Eastern Europe and the cartels in South America have been carving up our territories, Vance. They smell blood in the water. They know the Sovereign is weak."

"Weak?" I tilted my head.

Before Viktor could blink, I moved. It wasn't the slow, deliberate pace of a clockmaker; it was the blinding, surgical speed of a apex predator. In less than a second, I closed the distance, grabbed the lapels of his expensive cashmere coat, and slammed him against the solid oak pillar beside the entrance.

The impact shook the entire room. Viktor’s bodyguards reached instantly for their concealed holsters, but Kael and four tactical operatives had their assault rifles leveled at their chests before their hands even touched leather.

"Don't move," Kael barked.

Viktor gasped, the wind knocked out of him, but his eyes weren't filled with fear—they were burning with dark, twisted exhilaration.

"That's it," Viktor wheezed, a bloody smile touching his lips. "That's the brother I remember."

I held him pinned against the pillar, my face inches from his. "Viktor, listen to me very carefully. I retired to live a quiet life. I gave up the throne, the money, the blood. But the moment someone touches my daughter—the moment someone tries to starve her, cage her, or treat her like garbage—every single rule I wrote for the underworld goes out the window."

I pressed my forearm harder against his windpipe.

"You want your bank accounts back? You want your territory?" I whispered. "You're going to help me burn the entire elite social circle of this city to ash, starting with every single politician, judge, and corporate executive who protected my wife's family. If you hesitate for even one second, I will take your empire, your life, and feed your remains to the crows."

Viktor stared at me, his chest heaving, the arrogant smirk completely gone, replaced by the chilling realization that the monster he thought had gone soft was deadlier than ever.
