Chapter 1 - THE CELL OF THE FRAMEDThe steel door of the county holding cell slammed shut with a heavy, echoing clang, sealing me off from the rest of the world.

Through the small wired glass window, I could still picture Daniel’s triumphant smile as the police cruisers had escorted me away from our mother’s estate. He believed he had won. He had inherited eighteen million dollars, successfully painted me as an abusive daughter, and secured his future with a stroke of a forged pen.

He thought a jail cell would break me.

He didn't realize that for fourteen years, my entire profession had been tearing apart the exact kind of shoddy, amateurish financial fraud he had just committed.

I sat down on the narrow metal bunk, pulled a legal pad and a pen from the property bag the desk sergeant had given me, and smiled in the dark.
