Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s Safe House and the Secret LedgerThe interior of Adrian Voss’s private penthouse overlooking the snow-capped peaks of Montana was a fortress of glass, steel, and absolute quiet. There was no sound of wind here, only the low, steady hum of a climate-control system and the crackle of a massive stone fireplace.

Elena sat wrapped in layers of dry, soft cashmere, a steaming cup of herbal tea cradled between her palms. Her skin was slowly regaining its natural warmth, though the trauma of the night still lingered in the haunted look in her eyes. Across the room, a personal physician packed up his medical bag, offering a reassuring nod to Adrian.

"She and the baby are stable, Mr. Voss," the doctor said quietly. "Malnourished, exhausted, and suffering from mild hypothermia, but the child is resilient. Complete rest for forty-eight hours is mandatory."

"Thank you, Doctor. Thomas will escort you out," Adrian replied without taking his eyes off Elena.

Once the door clicked shut, the room fell into a heavy, contemplative silence. The black guard dog lay sound asleep on the plush rug near the fireplace, its tail twitching dreamily.

Adrian walked over, placing a small glass of water on the marble table beside her before pulling up a minimalist leather chair. He sat down, resting his elbows on his knees, watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"You didn't have to come back for me," Elena whispered, her voice rough from the cold. "You came for Damon's debt. You could have ignored the kennel."

"I don't ignore things that offend my sense of order, Elena," Adrian said smoothly. "And cruelty driven by incompetence is the highest form of disorder."

Elena looked down at her tea, watching the steam rise in delicate, twisting patterns. "Damon thinks he’s untouchable. His family controls half the shipping ports in the Northwest. They have judges in their pockets, politicians at their dinner parties. When my father died and left me to settle his estate, Damon’s marriage proposal wasn't a choice—it was a hostile takeover."

"A hostile takeover requires leverage," Adrian noted, his tone dangerously calm. "And Damon’s leverage was built on quicksand."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger with rusted brass locks—a book Elena recognized instantly. Her breath hitched. It was her father’s secret ledger, the one Damon had spent two years torturing her to find. The book that contained the proof of every illegal bribe, smuggled shipment, and corporate extortion committed by the Cross family.

"How... how did you get that?" Elena breathed, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"Your father was a cautious man," Adrian said, sliding the ledger across the table toward her. "He knew the wolves he was dealing with. Before he died, he deposited a secondary copy into an escrow account tied to my primary holding firm—contingent upon one specific condition."

Elena looked up, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What condition?"

"If his daughter ever found herself trapped in a cage of the Cross family's making," Adrian’s eyes darkened, locking onto hers with a fierce, possessive intensity, "every asset, every port, and every secret they own transfers immediately and irrevocably to me."

Adrian leaned forward, resting his hands on the table, closing the distance between them.

"Damon thinks he lost a wife tonight, Elena," Adrian whispered, a dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips. "He doesn't realize he just lost his entire empire."
