Chapter 5 - The Heir to the Empire and the Gathering StormTwo months later, the bitter chill of winter had given way to the crisp, blooming winds of spring across Montana. The Cross estate—now officially renamed and repurposed as the western headquarters of Voss Enterprises—stood silent and majestic against the foothills.

Inside the master suite, sunlight poured through high arched windows, illuminating a nursery decorated in soft neutrals, charcoal gray, and deep forest green. Elena sat in a velvet rocking chair, cradling a newborn baby boy wrapped in a fine cashmere blanket. The baby’s breathing was soft and rhythmic against her chest, a living miracle born safely away from the nightmares of her past.
The heavy door creaked open, and Adrian stepped inside. He had discarded his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, powerful lines of his build. He stopped a few feet away, his stern, unyielding expression softening in a way that only Elena ever witnessed.
"He's quiet today," Adrian observed softly, walking over to stand beside the chair. He leaned down, placing a large, warm hand gently over the baby's tiny back.
"He takes after his father," Elena murmured with a faint, teasing smile, looking up at him through her lashes. "Stubborn, quiet, and impossible to read."
Adrian chuckled, a low, rich sound that vibrated in his chest. He reached down, his fingers brushing against Elena's cheek, tilting her face up so he could press a lingering kiss to her forehead. "He’s safer here than anywhere else on earth. The perimeter guards have been doubled, and the federal trial for Damon begins next week."
Elena’s smile faded slightly at the mention of her ex-husband. "Will he try to appeal from prison?"
"Let him try," Adrian’s voice turned ice-cold in an instant. "Every judge in the state has recused themselves or been vetted. Damon will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars, contemplating what happens when you cross someone who holds all the cards."
Before Elena could reply, a sharp, urgent chime echoed from the smart-panel built into the nursery wall. Adrian frowned, tapping the screen to bring up the estate's security feed.
The image on the screen showed the main security gate at the edge of the property. A sleek, unmarked black sedan had pulled up directly blocking the entrance. A single figure stepped out of the vehicle—a woman wearing a wide-brimmed black hat and a heavy mourning veil, clutching a letter tightly in her gloved hands.
Margaret Cross.
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat, her grip tightening instinctively around the baby. "She... how is she out? She was facing ten years for conspiracy!"
Adrian stared at the screen, his eyes narrowing into two dangerous slits of obsidian. The relaxed warmth in his posture vanished completely, replaced by the lethal stillness of a coiled predator.
"Bail," Adrian muttered, his voice dangerously low. "A corrupt federal judge granted her release three hours ago before my team could block the motion."

Margaret looked directly into the security camera lens on the gate, a twisted, desperate smile stretching across her face as if she could see right through the screen into the nursery.
"She thinks she has a final card to play," Adrian said, turning away from the screen and meeting Elena’s frightened eyes with absolute, unwavering calm. "Stay here. Lock the door. Let me handle our uninvited guest."
