Chapter 6 - The Witch’s Last Breath and the Trap SprungThe spring wind whipped Margaret Cross’s black veil across her face as she stood defiantly in the center of the courtyard, surrounded by half a dozen of Adrian’s heavily armed private security guards. She didn't look like the untouchable matriarch of the past; she looked desperate, unhinged, and dangerous.

"I demand to see my grandson!" Margaret shrieked, waving the white envelope in her hand like a weapon. "Voss! You think you’ve won? You think stealing our name and our ports makes you a king? You’re nothing but a street rat playing with stolen money!"

The heavy oak doors of the mansion swung open with a slow, deliberate creak.

Adrian walked down the front steps. He didn't run. He didn't shout. He moved with the terrifying, unhurried grace of an executioner walking toward a condemned prisoner. He stopped ten feet away from her, his hands resting calmly in his pockets.

"Margaret," Adrian’s voice was smooth, cutting through the silence of the courtyard. "You look terrible. Desperation doesn't suit your complexion."

"You ruined us!" she screamed, taking a stumbling step forward, her eyes wild with rage. "You used a girl who wasn't even worth the ink on her marriage certificate to destroy three generations of Cross legacy! But you missed something, Voss! Look at this!"

She ripped open the envelope and pulled out a yellowed document, waving it triumphantly in the air. "An emergency injunction filed by the federal appellate court! The asset seizure is suspended pending a formal investigation into corporate extortion! You don't own these ports anymore, Voss! They revert back to us immediately!"

Adrian didn't even glance at the paper. He simply stood there, watching her with a look of profound, pitying amusement.

Margaret frowned, her triumphant smile faltering. "What? Are you deaf? Read it! Your entire empire is about to crumble the exact same way you tore ours down!"

"Margaret," Adrian said softly, tilting his head. "Do you honestly believe a woman who spent two decades bribing federal judges would suddenly find an honest one to bail her out?"

Color drained instantly from Margaret’s face. "What are you talking about?"

"The judge who signed that injunction?" Adrian stepped closer, his shadow completely swallowing her up. "He was arrested forty-five minutes ago for accepting a massive wire transfer from an offshore account originating in the Cayman Islands."

Margaret stumbled backward, the paper slipping from her trembling fingers and fluttering uselessly into the damp grass. "No... no, that’s impossible... my contacts said—"

"Your contacts work for me, Margaret," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "Every phone call you made from prison, every corrupt official you bribed, every desperate move you planned—my team recorded it all, authenticated it, and handed it directly to the Attorney General before you even walked out of the prison gates."

She stared at him, her chest heaving as the horrifying truth finally shattered her fragile mind. She hadn't found a loophole; she had walked straight into a slaughterhouse.

"You... you set me up," she whispered, her voice cracking.

"I didn't set you up," Adrian replied, turning his back on her and signaling to the guards. "I simply gave you enough rope to hang yourself."

Two guards stepped forward, grabbing Margaret by the arms as she began to sob hysterically, her legs giving out beneath her. They dragged her across the courtyard, past the very kennel where she had once watched Elena freeze, throwing her into the back of a waiting federal transport van.

Adrian stood alone in the center of the courtyard, watching the van disappear down the winding mountain road. The battle was over. The Cross family was completely, permanently erased from history.
