Chapter 1 - The Ghost from the Past

The sterile smell of hospital antiseptic usually cleared Ethan Cole’s head, but tonight, it only suffocated him.

Standing in the fluorescent-lit corridor of Mercy Harbor Medical Center, the silence between him and the seven-year-old girl felt heavier than the St. Louis storm raging outside.

"Brooks," Ethan muttered under his breath, the name grating against his memory like rusted iron.

Clara Brooks.

The name flashed through his mind alongside a faded Polaroid photograph he hadn't looked at in over a decade. A girl with dark, expressive eyes, a hesitant smile, and a sketchbook full of architectural dreams. Clara. The woman he had walked away from twelve years ago when his ambitious corporate career began to take off, leaving his hometown and a messy, complicated past behind him.

"Mr. Cole?" Mara Leland, the social worker, interrupted his spiral. Her eyes were sharp, scanning his face. "Do you know this family?"

Ethan swallowed, his throat dry. "I... I knew her mother. A long time ago."

"Well, her mother isn't answering her phone, and the motel key card in this bag traces back to a place called The Starlight Inn on Fourth Street," Mara said, holding up the plastic card like a piece of evidence. "The desk clerk there says a woman matching Clara’s description hasn’t returned since yesterday morning. She left these two girls alone."

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs. Left them alone? Clara would never abandon her children unless something catastrophic had happened.

"Let me see her," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave as he looked toward the pediatric bay where baby Emma was resting.

Before Mara could object, a frantic voice echoed down the hallway.

"Let me through! I'm looking for two kids, my nieces—!"

A man burst through the emergency room doors, panting, soaked to the skin, and looking wild-eyed. It was a man Ethan recognized instantly from local business circles, though he looked entirely unraveled tonight.

Marcus Vance.

Ethan’s blood ran cold. Marcus Vance was a ruthless real estate developer, a man known for tearing down historic neighborhoods to build luxury high-rises. And as Marcus spotted Ethan standing next to Sadie, his face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated panic.

"Cole?" Marcus gasped, clutching his chest. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Sadie scrambled backward from the plastic chair, her small hands curling into tight fists. Her eyes locked onto Marcus Vance with a venom that no seven-year-old child should ever possess.

"That's him," Sadie whispered, her voice slicing through the sterile air like a razor. "That's the man who killed my mother."
