Chapter 2 - The Developer’s Shadow

The hospital hallway seemed to tilt on its axis.

Marcus Vance took a sharp step back, his manicured hands flying up defensively. "What is this? What is this little liar talking about? I’ve never seen this kid in my life!"

"You're a liar!" Sadie screamed, lunging forward with a ferocity that caught everyone off guard. Mara Leland barely managed to grab the girl's shoulders, holding her back as Sadie thrashed and sobbed. "You came to the motel! You gave her the papers! You said if she didn't sign, we wouldn't have a place to sleep!"

Ethan stepped between Marcus and the child, his towering frame blocking the developer. Ethan’s eyes, usually calculating and cold in the boardroom, burned with a terrifying intensity.

"Back off, Marcus," Ethan warned, his voice dangerously low. "Lower your voice, and start talking right now. What do you have to do with Clara Brooks?"

Marcus swallowed hard, smoothing down the front of his soaked designer jacket, trying desperately to regain his composure. "Cole, you’re out of your mind. I'm a developer. Clara Brooks was just... a tenant in an old apartment building downtown that my firm acquired for redevelopment. There was a routine eviction notice. People get desperate, they make things up—"

"She didn't make anything up," Ethan interrupted, pulling the bent MetroLink card and the gas station receipt from his own hand where Mara had handed them moments earlier. "This is her daughter, Marcus. Clara’s daughter. And you just walked into a hospital looking for them. How did you know they were here?"

Marcus froze. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"I... I received an anonymous tip," Marcus stammered, his eyes darting toward the exit. "Someone called my office saying a child matching her description was brought in here."

"An anonymous tip at midnight on a Sunday?" Ethan stepped closer, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "No, Marcus. You've been watching them. Or worse... you caused whatever happened to Clara tonight."

Before Marcus could answer, the heavy double doors of the emergency room blasted open again, driven by a fresh gust of wind and rain. Two police officers stepped inside, shaking water from their heavy yellow ponchos.

"Officer!" Mara Leland called out, raising her badge. "Over here. We need an immediate welfare check on a room at The Starlight Inn on Fourth Street. And detain this man—he's connected to an endangered mother and her children."

Marcus Vance’s eyes widened in sheer panic. As the officers moved in, his gaze locked onto Ethan with a chilling promise.

"You're digging your own grave, Cole," Marcus hissed as the handcuffs clicked onto his wrists. "You have no idea what Clara was mixed up in. You think you're playing the white knight, but you're just walking into a slaughterhouse."
