Chapter 18 - The Final Audit

February 14th, 2027.

Valentine’s Day in Denver brought a blizzard that blanketed the city in feet of pristine, blinding white snow.

Sitting at my polished oak desk, I opened the final closing documents sent over by the federal bankruptcy trustee. The liquidation of Grant Sterling’s illegal assets was officially complete. Every single shell corporation, hidden bank account, and fraudulent property title had been seized, dissolved, and audited down to the last cent.

Attached to the file was a handwritten note from Agent Miller:

Claire—Case officially closed. The federal government extends its gratitude for your forensic assistance in dismantling the largest white-collar fraud ring in Colorado history. Enjoy your peace.

I set the note down, closed the manila folder for the very last time, and placed it inside the bottom drawer of my desk. I didn't need to look at it ever again. The ledger of my life had been balanced, and the balance sheet belonged exclusively to me.
