Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

“Agent Miller,” Judge Harrison said, leaning back in her leather chair with a look of profound satisfaction. “You have the floor. Explain why federal agents are interrupting my docket.”

Agent Miller stepped up to the podium, placing a heavy manila folder right beside Grant’s pathetic emergency petition.

“Your Honor, over the past forty-eight hours, federal investigators, in collaboration with private forensic auditors, have uncovered a massive wire fraud, identity theft, and mortgage forgery ring operating out of Denver and the Cayman Islands. The mastermind behind this operation is Grant Sterling, aided and abetted by his son, Ryan Sterling.”

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Brooke covered her mouth with her manicured hand, her eyes bulging in sheer terror.

“That’s a lie!” Grant screamed, slamming his palms onto the defense table. “It’s a malicious fabrication by a hysterical, unstable woman trying to ruin our family!”

“Quiet, Mr. Sterling, or I will have you hauled out in cuffs right now,” Judge Harrison snapped, her voice like cracking ice. “Continue, Agent.”

“The evidence is absolute, Your Honor,” Agent Miller continued, opening the folder. “On November 14th, using a forged power of attorney and a counterfeit signature belonging to Claire Sterling, Grant and Ryan Sterling executed a two point five million dollar secondary mortgage on the Denver penthouse located at 740 Meridian Avenue. That property was purchased by Mrs. Sterling two years prior to her marriage, using entirely independent venture capital funds. The defendants used falsified corporate identities to siphon the funds into offshore accounts to cover personal commercial real estate debts.”

Agent Miller turned his gaze directly toward Ryan, who looked as though he was about to vomit onto the mahogany floor.

“Furthermore, Your Honor, we have intercepted wire transfers executed less than twelve hours ago, attempting to liquidate remaining joint-access accounts belonging to Mrs. Sterling to fund an immediate flight to a non-extradition country. Warrants for the arrest of Grant Sterling and Ryan Sterling on charges of bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy were signed by Federal Magistrate Judge Callahan ten minutes ago.”

The courtroom erupted into chaos. Henderson, Grant’s lawyer, grabbed his briefcase, backed away from his clients as if they were contaminated with the plague, and whispered loudly to the bailiff, “I am officially withdrawing from representation. Immediately.”

“Grant Sterling, Ryan Sterling, you are under arrest,” Agent Miller commanded, nodding to the two armed federal marshals who flanked the exit doors.

The heavy click of steel handcuffs echoing against the courtroom walls was the sweetest sound I had ever heard in my life.
