Chapter 14 - The Finger points

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat as she stared at the glowing numbers on the tablet screen. The terminal ID listed was the exact workstation she had been assigned to use over the past week.

"This... this isn't mine," Sophia whispered, looking up in sheer panic as the weight of the implication crashed down on her. "I was just organizing old invoices! I don't even know how to access the security protocols!"

"I know you don't," Lorenzo said calmly, leaning back in his chair and watching her with his sharp, unblinking eyes. "Because if you did, Salvatore’s men wouldn't have had to blow the eastern gate open—they would have walked straight through the service tunnel using your login credentials."

Sophia exhaled a shaky breath, the terror subsiding slightly into pure confusion. "Then why is my ID on the log?"

"Because someone in this house wants you out," Lorenzo said, his voice hardening. "Or worse, they wanted to use you as a scapegoat while they handed my empire over to a rival. The system requires a physical keycard to activate that terminal. And only three people in this wing possess one: me, Marco, and the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable."

Sophia’s mind raced back through the days she had spent working in the silent, echoing corridors of the east wing. "Mrs. Gable... she always looked at me like I didn't belong here. She told me never to touch anything on the upper desks."

"Mrs. Gable has worked for my family for twenty years," Lorenzo murmured, standing up slowly and walking toward the tall window. "Which means she knows where every body is buried—literally and figuratively."
