Chapter 18 - The Unseen Threat

While peace settled over the Moretti estate, a storm was brewing on the other side of Chicago. In a dimly lit private room of an upscale downtown club, a man watched security footage streamed from a hidden camera near the Moretti gates. It was Victor Vance, the younger brother of Salvatore, and a man far more ruthless and calculating than his imprisoned sibling.

"Salvatore failed," Victor said, swirling the dark amber liquid in his crystal glass as he stared at the screen showing Lorenzo and Sophia standing near the courtyard. "He let sentimentality and arrogance cloud his judgment. He thought a frontal assault would break Moretti."

"What do you want to do, Mr. Vance?" his chief enforcer asked from the shadows. "The Commission still respects Lorenzo's territory. If we strike again without a foolproof plan, we’ll trigger an all-out gang war."

"We aren't going to attack him with guns," Victor smiled coldly, his eyes narrowing as he watched Sophia brush a stray lock of hair from Emma's forehead on the monitor. "Lorenzo spent three years building an impenetrable fortress of stone and ice. But now? Now he has something soft inside the walls. Something he cares about."

Victor set his glass down with a sharp click. "Find out everything about Sophia Carter. Where she came from before New York, who her family was, and what secrets she’s hiding. If Lorenzo wants to play family man, we’ll make sure his new family becomes his ultimate destruction."
