Chapter 9 - The Siege

The hallway outside erupted into chaos. Automatic gunfire chewed through the heavy oak doors, splinters of mahogany exploding into the study like shrapnel. Sophia screamed, wrapping her body entirely around Emma, shielding the little girl beneath the heavy oak desk as bullets punched through the walls.

Lorenzo didn't flinch. He fired three calculated shots through the splintered wood of the door, hearing a sharp cry of pain from the hallway followed by the heavy crash of an attacker collapsing.

"Marco! The panic room behind the bookshelf!" Lorenzo shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire. "Get them inside!"

"Boss, what about you?" Marco fired a burst down the corridor through the shattered door frame.

"I’m going to finish this," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping an octave into a dark, terrifying register. "Open the panel. Now!"

Marco slammed his hand against the side of the mahogany bookcase. With a heavy mechanical groan, the massive shelves swung inward, revealing a dark, steel-reinforced sanctuary equipped with monitors, weapons, and emergency comms.

"Get in," Sophia ordered herself, her maternal instinct overriding her terror. She pushed Emma into the dark recess, but stopped at the threshold, looking back at Lorenzo. "I'm not leaving you out here to die."

Lorenzo looked at her—really looked at her—for a long, lingering moment. In the middle of a warzone, with smoke filling the room and the smell of cordite burning their lungs, a strange, quiet calm settled between them.

"If I don't walk out of this room, Miss Carter," Lorenzo said softly, handing her his spare pistol, "you lock that door from the inside and you don't open it for anyone. Do you understand?"

Before she could answer, a massive explosion rocked the hallway. The heavy double doors blew inward in a cloud of smoke and fire.
