Chapter 2 - THE VAULT OF SECRETSSix years ago, the tech world whispered rumors about a reclusive prodigy known only by the codenamed handle "Aegis."

While venture capitalists threw billions at flashy apps with zero utility, Aegis was quietly architecting quantum-resistant cryptographic frameworks capable of locking down global financial ledgers at a single command. Nobody outside a very small circle knew that Aegis was twenty-one-year-old Mara Mercer, working out of a subterranean laboratory buried three hundred feet beneath Mercer Dynamics headquarters.
When Damian orchestrated a hostile corporate coup to push me out of the family empire—claiming my chronic asthma made me a "liability to shareholder confidence"—Grandfather Elias didn't fire me.
Instead, he handed me a master encryption key in absolute secrecy and whispered: “Build a trap, Mara. Let the wolf grow fat on stolen meat, then lock the gate.”
"Mr. Mercer!" A sharp, authoritative voice cut through the mounting chaos of the cathedral.
It was Lawrence Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Croft Law Firm and the sole executor of Grandfather Elias's estate. Sterling strode down the central aisle, clutching a thick, cream-colored leather folder sealed with heavy red wax. Behind him walked four private security operatives in matte-black tactical gear.
The congregation parted instantly, whispering in anxious shock.
Damian tried desperately to recover his composure, forcing a strained public-relations smile onto his face as he shoved his screaming phone into his pocket. "Ah, Sterling. Right on time. I assume we can proceed with reading the will privately in the vestry and handle the immediate consolidation of Mercer assets—"
"The reading of the will happens right here, right now, Mr. Mercer," Sterling interrupted, his voice cutting like a razor. He didn't even glance at Damian.
Sterling stopped directly in front of me, lowered his head in a deep, respectful bow, and opened the leather binder.
"Last Will and Testament of Elias Vance Mercer," Sterling announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "To all heirs, associates, and parasites assembled: Let it be known that Mercer Dynamics was never a traditional corporate entity. It is an algorithmic dynasty. And its sole owner, architect, and controlling shareholder..."

Sterling paused, turning his piercing gaze slowly from Damian’s pale face to the stunned crowd.
"...is Mara Mercer."
