Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Blood

"They didn't come to kill me, Grace. They came to erase him."
The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, leaving Grace alone with the man whose name was whispered in fear across New York. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound filling the room, alongside the faint scent of expensive cologne, copper, and sterile antiseptic.
"You should let me check your vitals," Grace said, gently trying to pull her hand back. But Dominic didn't let go. Instead, he pulled her closer, forcing her to lean over the bed.
"The boy," Dominic demanded, his voice strained. "Is he safe?"
"He’s in the pediatric ICU under an alias, just like you ordered before you crashed," Grace murmured, looking around cautiously. "I changed his chart myself. Officially, he’s listed as a John Doe from a car accident on the West Side Highway. But Mr. Moretti... the administrative staff are asking questions. Vanessa saw him. She recognized him."
Dominic’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "She didn't just recognize him. Her family is the reason he was in that burning building."
Grace’s breath caught. "Who is he?"
Dominic looked at her for a long, silent moment, analyzing her face. He saw no greed in her steady gray eyes, no hidden agenda—only the exhaustion of a woman who had spent forty hours fighting to keep a nameless child and a mafia kingpin alive.
"His name is Leo," Dominic said, his voice softening in a way that shocked Grace. "He is my brother’s son. My brother was murdered three years ago by a traitor inside the syndicate. Everyone thinks Leo died with him in that car fire. I’ve kept him hidden in a safe house outside the city ever since."
"But someone found him," Grace realized, the puzzle pieces falling into place. "The explosion at your penthouse... it wasn't a hit on your business. It was a targeted strike to eliminate the last true heir of the Moretti bloodline."
"If the Bellini family controls the Moretti empire through a marriage to me, they win," Dominic explained, a dark smile touching his lips. "But if Leo is alive, my brother’s legacy stands. The Bellinis lose everything. Vanessa’s father will stop at nothing to ensure that boy never leaves this hospital alive."
He looked down at Grace’s hand, his fingers tracing the thin silver ring on her finger—the only piece of jewelry she wore. "You protected him tonight. You stood between Vanessa and his room. Why?"
Grace looked away, memories flashing through her mind. "Because when I was seven, my mother died in an emergency room just like this one. No one knew who she was, and the doctors didn't try hard enough because she didn't have a name or money. I promised myself I would never let a child feel invisible or abandoned in a hospital. I don't care who his family is, Mr. Moretti. To me, he’s just a little boy who needs to breathe."
Dominic’s gaze darkened with an intense, unreadable emotion. He raised his hand, his thumb softly tracing the line of her jaw. "Then you and I have the same mission, Grace. But you need to understand something. By protecting him, you've put a target on your back."

Suddenly, the lights in the private suite flickered.
The heart monitor let out a long, continuous drone as the power abruptly cut out, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
