Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist and the New Kingdom

"The queen is dead. Long live the nurse."

Vanessa raised her weapon, her eyes crazed with desperation. "Kill them! Kill all of them!" she screamed to her men.

But before her guards could raise their rifles, the heavy glass windows at the end of the hallway shattered inward in an explosion of sparks and glass shards.

Tactical smoke grenades rolled across the floor, filling the corridor with dense, blinding white smoke. Red laser sights cut through the haze, locking onto the chests of Vanessa’s guards.

"Drop your weapons! FBI! Don't move!"

A dozen heavily armed federal agents, led by a sharp-eyed woman in a tactical jacket, swarmed the hallway from the emergency stairs and the exterior scaffolding. Vanessa’s guards instantly threw their weapons down, realizing they were completely outgunned.

Vanessa panicked, spinning around to shoot Grace out of pure spite, but Grace didn't freeze. She grabbed a heavy metal IV pole next to her and swung it with all her might, striking Vanessa across the wrists. The silver pistol clattered to the floor, and Vanessa screamed as she was tackled to the ground by two federal agents.

"Dominic Moretti," the lead FBI agent said, stepping through the smoke, her weapon lowered but ready. "I see you’re awake."

Dominic didn't look at the agent. He was looking at Grace, who was currently kneeling on the floor, checking Leo for any injuries from the shattered glass.

"Agent Vance," Dominic said coolly. "You’re late."

"We had to clear the Bellini ambush in the lobby," Agent Vance replied, looking at the chaos in the hallway. She looked down at Vanessa, who was being cuffed and dragged away, screaming curses at Grace. "It seems your friend here did most of our work for us. The live stream she broadcasted just gave us enough probable cause to dismantle the entire Bellini network by morning."

Dominic turned to Grace. He walked over to her, ignoring his bleeding wounds, and knelt down on the floor beside her. He reached out, his large hand gently taking her chin, forcing her to look into his dark eyes.

"You knew about the trust," Dominic murmured. "How?"

Grace smiled faintly, her gray eyes reflecting the emergency lights that were finally flashing back on as the hospital’s primary power was restored. "I didn't know about the trust until I saw the broken silver chain Leo was holding. The engraving on the back of the cross matches the corporate seal of the Moretti Shipping Company. I saw it on your ring earlier. I just put the pieces together."

Dominic stared at her, an intense, profound admiration burning in his chest. For years, he had been surrounded by people who wanted his money, his power, or his life. But this woman, with her wrinkled uniform and her tired eyes, had risked everything just to keep a child safe and do what was right.

"The Bellinis are finished," Dominic said softly, his thumb caressing her cheek. "And my engagement to Vanessa is officially void."

"What happens now?" Grace asked, her heart racing for an entirely different reason now as she looked at him.

Dominic stood up, pulling Grace up with him. He picked Leo up with his other arm, holding the boy securely against his shoulder.

"Now," Dominic said, his voice echoing through the clearing smoke of the hospital corridor, loud enough for Agent Vance and every remaining enforcer to hear. "The Moretti empire needs a new foundation. And Leo needs a mother who knows how to fight for him."

He looked down at Grace, a devastatingly handsome, genuine smile breaking across his face.

"Grace Bennett, your shift at this hospital is over. From now on, you belong at my side. And New York is going to learn exactly what happens when you touch the woman who saved the king."

Grace looked at Leo, who was smiling at her, then up at Dominic’s fierce, unwavering gaze. She knew her life would never be safe, quiet, or normal again. But looking at the man holding her hand, she knew she had never felt safer.

EPILOGUE: ONE YEAR LATERThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in the warm glow of thousands of white candles.

There were no Bellinis left in the city. The Moretti empire had been completely legitimized, its shipping lines cleansed of illegal contracts, turning into the largest legitimate conglomerate on the East Coast.

At the head table sat seven-year-old Leo, proudly wearing a miniature tuxedo, laughing as he played with a silver chain around his neck.

Beside him stood Dominic Moretti, looking flawless in a tailored black suit, his dark eyes fixed on the entrance of the ballroom.

The doors opened, and the room fell silent.

Grace walked down the aisle. She wore an exquisite, flowing emerald silk gown that complemented her steady gray eyes. She wore no expensive diamonds around her throat—only the thin silver ring that had belonged to her mother on her right hand.

But on her left ring finger, glittering in the candlelight, was the heavy, black onyx Moretti seal.

Dominic stepped down from the stage, meeting her halfway. He took her hand, lifting it to his lips, kissing the ring before looking into her eyes.

"Are you ready, Mrs. Moretti?" he whispered.

Grace smiled, her eyes filled with the fierce, independent fire that had captured his heart in a dark hospital room a year ago.

"Always, Dominic. Just try not to get blown up again."

Dominic laughed, pulling her into his arms as the music began to play, welcoming the new Queen of Manhattan.
