Chapter 4 - The Betrayal in the Shadows

"A father’s ambition can easily be painted in a daughter’s blood."

The corridors of St. Catherine’s were a labyrinth of shadows. The emergency stairwell was cold, the red exit signs glowing weakly on emergency battery power.

Dominic moved like a ghost, ignoring the blood beginning to seep through his white bandages. Grace followed closely behind him, her mind racing. She knew the layout of the hospital better than anyone, leading him through the service corridors used for laundry and waste disposal to avoid the main hallways.

As they reached the heavy double doors of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the sound of muffled voices echoed from the nurse's station.

"Where is the chart for the John Doe admitted at 2:17 AM?"

Grace recognized that voice. It wasn't Vanessa’s father, Arthur Bellini. It was Vanessa herself.

"I... I don't know, Ms. Bellini," a young nursing intern stammered, her voice thick with tears. "The power outage wiped the system terminals, and Nurse Bennett took the physical chart before the blackout."

"Find it," Vanessa snapped, her voice stripped of all its high-society sweetness, revealing a cold, calculating ruthlessness. "And if you can't find the chart, go into every room until you find a boy with a silver chain around his neck. When you find him, give him this."

Through the glass panel of the service door, Grace saw Vanessa slide a small, clear vial of amber liquid across the counter toward a tall man in a doctor’s lab coat—but he wasn't a doctor. He had a military posture and a scar running down his neck.

"Succinylcholine," Grace whispered in horror, her breath fogging the glass. "It’s a paralytic. It will stop his breathing in seconds, and it’s almost undetectable in a standard autopsy if they claim it was respiratory failure from the smoke inhalation."

Dominic’s eyes turned murderous. He raised the captured weapon, aiming it through the glass directly at Vanessa’s head.

"No," Grace pleaded, grabbing his arm. "If you shoot her here, the entire Bellini syndicate will descend on this hospital before we can get Leo out. We need to catch them in the act and expose them to the hospital board and the police. There are cameras on the emergency backup loop in the pediatric ward!"

Dominic looked down at her, his eyes dark with a mixture of anger and a strange, sudden respect. "You think like a strategist, Grace. But you underestimate how corrupt this city is. The police work for the Bellinis. The board works for whoever pays them more."

"But the media doesn't," Grace countered, pulling out her personal smartphone. "The hospital’s internal network is down, but my cellular data is still working. I’m recording everything right now."

Dominic looked at the phone in her hand, then at the ferocious determination in her gray eyes. A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.

"My sweet nurse," he murmured, his voice sending a shiver down her spine. "You really are a dangerous woman."

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the end of the pediatric hallway.

The man in the fake lab coat had just kicked open the door to Room 412—Leo’s room.
