Chapter 5 - The Ghost of AetheriumThe man lowered his weapon slowly, the beam of his flashlight illuminating a face I hadn't seen in fifteen years. Deep wrinkles lined his eyes, a jagged scar ran down his left jawline, and his hair had turned completely silver.

"Julian?" I choked out, dropping the knife as my knees went weak.
The man before me wasn't dead. My older brother, the corporate titan who was supposed to have perished in a fiery plane crash two years ago, stood alive in the damp gloom of a Swiss coastal cave.
Julian looked at me, his eyes dead and exhausted, before his gaze drifted down to the two shivering boys in our arms. When he saw Noah and Eli, the stoic armor cracked, and a single tear cut a clean path through the soot on his cheek.
"You took your sweet time, Artie," Julian rasped, his voice rough from disuse.
"You son of a bitch," I snarled, lunging forward and grabbing him by the collar of his wet-suit, shaking him with a mix of fury and overwhelming relief. "You let the world think you were dead! You left your sons to be hunted like animals! Do you have any idea what we just went through?!"
"Dad!" Noah screamed, breaking away from me and throwing himself at Julian.
Julian dropped to his knees, burying his face in his older son's hair, pulling both Noah and little Eli—who had just stirred awake—into a fierce, desperate embrace.
"I'm sorry, my boys. I'm so sorry," Julian choked out, kissing their foreheads repeatedly. He looked up at me over their heads, his expression grim. "I had to fake my death, Artie. It was the only way to keep them alive. The board of Aetherium Corp wasn't just a board of directors. It was a syndicate."
Marcus limped forward, pressing a hand against his bleeding shoulder. "Mr. Sterling... if you're alive, that means the man running the syndicate—the one who orchestrated the hostile takeover and tried to blow us out of the sky tonight—is still sitting in your corporate chair."
Julian stood up slowly, keeping the boys behind him. "Worse than that, Marcus. The man running the syndicate isn't an outsider."
Julian pulled a heavy, encrypted flash drive from his pocket and tossed it to me. I caught it with my bloodied hand.
"It’s our uncle. Victor Sterling."
The name hit me like a sledgehammer. Victor Sterling—our patriarch, the man who had raised us after our parents died, the benevolent elder statesman of the family.
"Victor?" I whispered, my mind rejecting the thought before logic forced it into place. "Uncle Victor is eighty years old! He's confined to a wheelchair!"
"It was all a front," Julian said bitterly, pacing the damp floor of the cave. "Victor didn't build his fortune on tech. He built it on weapons trafficking and cyber-blackmail. When I discovered what he was doing inside Aetherium Corp, and refused to let him use our quantum encryption grid for global surveillance, he tried to kill my wife and me. We survived the plane crash, but Sarah... Sarah didn't make it. I've been living in the shadows ever since, building a case against him. But Victor found out I was still alive. And tonight, he sent a message to both of us."

Julian pointed at the burning wreckage of my private jet visible through the cave opening.
"He knows you found the boys, Artie. Which means right now, Victor's private death squad is sweeping this entire coastline. We have less than an hour before they find this cave."
