Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE SYSTEMToby broke in under thirty seconds.

He didn't just give up the manifest; he gave up the entire operational architecture of the Valdés shipping syndicate.

According to Toby, Santiago’s honeymoon cruise wasn't a celebration. It was a mobile delivery drop. Hidden deep within the ship’s secure cargo hold—designated Compartment 7-Delta, accessible only via the private elevator shaft reserved for ship executives and VIP guests—were twelve crates of military-grade communication jamming hardware and smuggled documentation linked to federal corruption trials in Mexico City.

Don Ernesto Valdés wasn't just a construction tycoon; he was the primary logistics broker for a massive cartel-backed infrastructure ring that was currently under federal audit.

And Renata was wearing a bridal gown that contained a hidden micro-stitch transmitter sewn into the hem by her former intelligence unit before she resigned.

"They knew who you were the moment you applied for that job at your firm," Toby whimpered, sitting cross-legged on the floor with his hands cuffed behind his back using industrial zip-ties Renata had taken from their own containment case. "Santiago didn't fall in love with you, Renata. Don Ernesto hired a background profile firm. They wanted an elite combat instructor inside the family to train their personal security detail without raising flags. The marriage was supposed to break your spirit so you'd sign over your military pension and your father’s land deeds in Veracruz."

Renata looked down at Santiago, who was beginning to stir, letting out a groggy, pathetic whine.

She walked over, picked up the aluminum baseball bat, and tapped it against Santiago’s left shinbone.

Santiago bolted upright, screaming in pain before he even realized where he was.

"Renata—please—my leg—"

"Quiet," she commanded, grabbing him by his expensive silk collar and hauling him to his feet. She shoved him toward the bathroom mirror. "Look at yourself, Santiago. Generation after generation of Valdés men hiding behind inherited money, corporate lawyers, and aluminum bats because you're all too cowardly to face a real fight without a head start."

Santiago spat blood onto the glass. "You're dead. My father's security team controls every camera from here to Miami. You can't walk out of this cabin."

"I'm not going to walk out," Renata said coldly, lifting the ship’s internal telephone handset. She punched a four-digit extension she had memorized from Toby’s ID badge.

"Bridge," a bored voice answered. "This is Officer Vance. State your ID and sector."

Renata adjusted her voice, pitching it into the crisp, authoritarian tone of a corporate auditor dispatched by the cruise line’s board of directors.

"This is Compliance Inspector Morales, Federal Maritime and Corporate Oversight," Renata said, her voice dripping with bureaucratic frost. "We have a Code Red security breach in stateroom 4022. Valdés is non-compliant. Initiate immediate lockdown of VIP Deck Four and reroute the primary CCTV feed to the captain's private terminal. I want federal authorities notified at the next port of call in Belize."

There was a tense pause on the other end of the line.

"Ma'am, Mr. Valdés has direct clearance from corporate—"

"Mr. Valdés is currently bleeding on his own carpet after resisting federal inspection of an undeclared cargo hold," Renata interrupted, her tone sharp enough to cut glass. "If you don't lock down this deck within thirty seconds, Officer Vance, your name will be the first one listed in the indictment for accessory to smuggling."

A click sounded on the line, followed instantly by the shrill, mechanical wail of automated security bulkhead doors slamming shut across the entire corridor.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

Santiago stared at her in absolute horror. "What did you just do?"

"I just locked your family's golden cage," Renata said, smiling for the first time that night. "Now, let's go meet your father's business partners."
