Chapter 1 - The Shattered FrameThe torn photograph trembled in Sofia’s fragile hands, its edges frayed like the life she had been forced to live. In the faded polaroid, a radiant young woman smiled down at a pair of identical twin infants swaddled in pristine silk. One baby stared back with bright, curious eyes; the other blinked placidly into the flash, completely unaware that her world was about to plunge into permanent night.

“Look closely at the back of the photo, Sofia,” Leo whispered, his voice cracking with the heavy grief of a boy who had grown up too fast on the cold streets of Paris.
Before the wealthy man—Victor Sterling, the ruthless titan of Europe's private banking empire—could lunge forward, Sofia’s thumb traced the embossed lettering stamped onto the vintage Kodak paper: The Sterling-Vance Estate, Private Clinic, October 14th.
Victor’s face drained of all color, transforming into the mask of a cornered predator. His manicured hands gripped the gold-plated handle of his cane so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white.
“Lies! Filthy, fabricated street trash!” Victor shouted, his voice echoing across the manicured lawns of the park, drawing the startled glances of passing tourists. “Security! Get this vagrant away from my ward immediately!”
Two burly men in sharp black suits materialized from the shadows of the ancient oak trees, their heavy footsteps pounding against the gravel path. They moved with the brutal efficiency of trained mercenaries, converging on Leo like wolves closing in on a stray lamb.
“Don’t you dare touch him!” Sofia screamed. Her voice, usually soft and timid, cut through the afternoon air with the terrifying authority of a queen commanding her guard. She stood up so abruptly her white cane clattered against the wooden bench. Her unseeing eyes locked onto Victor with a chilling intensity. “You called him my ‘ward,’ Victor. Not my guardian. Not my uncle. My ward. Why did you correct yourself? What are you hiding from me?”
Victor froze, his breath catching in his throat. The mask of absolute control was slipping, revealing the panic underneath.
“Sofia, darling, listen to me,” Victor pleaded, taking a cautious step forward, his voice suddenly dripping with a sickeningly sweet concern. “That boy is a professional con artist. He has spent weeks studying our family history, fabricating evidence to extort millions from our foundation. You know I took you in out of the goodness of my heart after the tragic accident that—that took your sight.”
“Accident?” Leo laughed bitterly, stepping into the space between Victor and Sofia, shielding her with his frail frame. “Tell her about the ‘accident,’ Victor. Tell her how a healthy child goes into a private clinic for a routine fever and wakes up completely blind. Tell her about the massive hush-money payouts wired to Dr. Alistair’s offshore accounts the very same week!”
The bodyguards lunged forward, grabbing Leo by the collar of his faded jacket and hoisting him into the air.
“Let him go!” Sofia cried out, her hands sweeping wildly through the air until her fingertips brushed against Leo’s jacket. She grabbed his sleeve, pulling him toward her with a desperate strength born of pure adrenaline.
In that exact moment, Leo slipped a small, cold object into her palm—a heavy, antique silver signet ring engraved with a soaring hawk crest.
“Keep it,” Leo whispered fiercely as the bodyguards wrenched him away, dragging him backward across the gravel. “Meet me tonight at midnight behind the Notre-Dame Cathedral. If you want your sight back, come alone.”

As Leo was hauled away into a waiting black Mercedes, Sofia stood frozen on the path. Her fingers curled tightly around the heavy silver ring. The metal was freezing cold, but as it pressed against her skin, a sudden, burning electric shock surged up her arm.
Her eyes—milky-white and blind for as long as she could remember—fluttered violently. Deep within the dark abyss of her vision, a single flash of blinding white light pierced the void.
