Chapter 6 - The Verdict and the ShadowsThe jury deliberated for a mere forty-two minutes—a record for the high court of Paris.

When the foreman stood to read the verdict, the courtroom held its collective breath so tightly that the ticking of the grand clock above the judge’s bench sounded like falling hammers.
“On all forty-two counts of corporate fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and crimes against humanity,” the foreman announced clearly, “the defendant, Victor Sterling, is found Guilty.”
Bang.
The gavel fell like the final judgment of fate.
Victor didn’t scream. He didn’t curse. He simply slumped backward in his chair, staring blankly at the ceiling as two bailiffs stepped forward, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists and hauling him away through the subterranean prisoner exit. The empire he had built on blood and deception had crumbled into dust in less than twenty-four hours.
Outside the courthouse, the midday sun broke through the heavy Paris clouds, casting a golden glow over the steps of the Palais de Justice. Flashes blinded the air as hundreds of reporters surged forward, shouting questions over one another.
“Miss Sterling! What is your first act as the rightful head of the Sterling Trust?”
“Will you liquidate the bank?”
Sofia stood at the top of the grand marble steps, flanked by Leo and Commander Laurent. She adjusted her white cane, raised her chin, and spoke into the forest of microphones.
“The Sterling Trust will no longer fund corporate greed,” Sofia announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Every cent stolen from the public and hidden in offshore accounts will be returned to fund free medical research, neurological restoration clinics, and orphanages across the globe. The darkness I lived in will become the light that saves others.”
The crowd erupted into deafening applause.
As the cameras flashed, Leo stepped back quietly, slipping his hands into his pockets and turning toward the side alley leading down to the Seine. He had done his part. The mission was over. The princess had reclaimed her crown; the street boy had no place in a palace.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
Leo stopped dead in his tracks. He turned around to see Sofia walking straight toward him, her white cane tapping the stone with precise, confident rhythms. She stopped just inches away from him, her unseeing eyes locked onto his face as if she could see right through him.
“My job here is done, Sofia,” Leo said softly, a bittersweet smile touching his lips. “You’re the billionaire heiress now. You don't need a street kid guiding your way anymore.”
Sofia reached out, her delicate fingers finding the lapel of his jacket and pulling him forward.
“Who said anything about guiding me?” Sofia whispered, a playful, mischievous smile breaking across her face. “I need a Chief Security Officer for the new foundation... someone who knows how to pick locks, dodge bullets, and play the harmonica when the world gets too dark.”
Leo stared at her, stunned, before a wide, genuine laugh broke out across his face. He caught her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers.

“It pays minimum wage and the hours are terrible,” Leo grinned.
“Deal,” Sofia replied.
