Chapter 13 - The Corporate PhoenixBack in Chicago, Uncle Marcus was working sixteen-hour days out of a modest downtown office suite, spearheading the total restructuring of what remained of Vance Holdings. But instead of liquidating everything into the pockets of corrupt executives, Marcus was transforming the wreckage into something entirely different: a cooperative trust owned collectively by the long-suffering employees who had been exploited under my father's regime.

On a chilly Thursday morning, Marcus invited me to the newly renamed offices—now called Meridian Integrity Trust.
"Take a look at this, Evelyn," Marcus said, spinning his laptop around to show me a glowing financial projection report.
I scanned the numbers, my eyebrows lifting in genuine surprise. "You’ve turned the old land-development portfolio into affordable green housing initiatives across the Midwest?"
"Every single dollar recovered from your father's frozen offshore accounts and David's settlement has been redirected into community development," Marcus smiled, leaning back in his leather chair. "We're building homes for working families instead of luxury high-rises for corrupt politicians like Senator Sterling."
Speaking of Senator Sterling, his political career had imploded spectacularly within weeks of the press conference ambush. Facing multiple ethics investigations regarding his financial ties to Preston and David, Sterling had abruptly resigned from office, citing "health reasons," and retreated into complete political obscurity.
"And what about you, uncle?" I asked, looking at the tired yet deeply fulfilled lines around his eyes. "Are you going to stay on as CEO permanently?"
"Heavens, no," Marcus laughed, shaking his head. "I'm just the bridge. Once the restructuring is legally finalized next month, I'm handing the reins over to the new managing director. A forensic accountant with a brilliant mind, nerves of steel, and zero tolerance for corporate corruption."

He slid an official employment contract across the desk. At the top line, embossed in crisp black ink, was my own name.
"You built this rescue mission from the ground up, Evelyn," Marcus said gently. "It's time you stepped into the light and ran the company the right way."
