Chapter 16 - The New FoundationSummer arrived with the sweet scent of freshly cut hay and warm afternoon sunbeams streaming through the farmhouse windows.

The transformation of Meridian Integrity Trust was officially complete. A grand ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in downtown Chicago—not at an exclusive luxury hotel ballroom with crystal chandeliers, but at the newly opened community center funded entirely by the recovered corporate assets of Vance Enterprises.

As the newly appointed managing director of the Trust, I stood at the podium facing a room filled with working families, local business owners, and federal housing advocates.

My parents weren't there. Preston was locked away in Indiana. David was awaiting his final sentencing.

And for the first time in my life, their absence felt like pure, unadulterated freedom.

"For decades, we were told that power and success belong only to those who step on others to reach the top," I spoke into the microphone, my voice echoing clearly across the sunlit hall. "We were taught that family names excuse cruelty, and that silence is the price we pay for belonging."

I paused, looking out over the crowd, spotting Uncle Marcus smiling warmly in the front row, and catching a glimpse of Sophie sitting beside him, holding a brand-new sketchbook and beaming up at me with absolute pride.

"Today, we prove a different truth," I continued, a confident smile touching my lips. "True strength isn't found in corporate empires built on sand. It's found in the courage to speak up when everyone else stays silent. It's found in protecting the vulnerable, dismantling corruption, and building a future where no child ever has to fear the wolves at the table."

The applause that erupted wasn't the polite, suffocating murmur of high-society elites. It was a roar of genuine, thunderous celebration that shook the rafters.

When I stepped off the stage, Sophie ran straight into my arms, nearly knocking me over as she wrapped her tiny arms tightly around my waist.

"You were amazing, Mommy!" she cheered, looking up at me with sparkling eyes.

"We did it together, sweetheart," I whispered, lifting her up into the air as the cameras flashed around us—not capturing a tragedy or a public humiliation, but capturing a mother and daughter standing tall, unbreakable, and entirely free.
