Chapter 3 - The Assets and the Lies

The silence that followed Dr. Cole’s announcement was absolute. Grant’s arm trembled, the phone camera dipping slightly toward the floor. Vanessa’s smug smile completely evaporated, her eyes darting between Marcus and Claire with sudden, calculating panic.

“What... what did you just say?” Marcus stammered, his voice cracking. “The Bennett Foundation? That’s a multi-million dollar charitable trust. Claire doesn't run that. She runs a local nursing agency. She handles home-care visits for elderly people!”

“Bennett Home Health is a subsidiary of Bennett Medical Enterprises, Marcus,” Claire said, taking a slow step forward. She looked down at the divorce papers still resting on the glass table. “Which happens to be the largest rural medical transport and specialized nursing provider in the Southeast. I told you twelve years ago we should keep our businesses separate. You thought you were protecting your future empire from my 'poverty.' In reality, you were keeping your failing company away from my balance sheets.”

Marcus shook his head violently, refusing to accept the reality crashing down around him. “No. No, this is a trick. You’re lying. If you had that kind of money, why do you drive that ancient Honda? Why do you live in our modest house? Why didn't you say anything?”

“Because I didn't need a flash watch to feel important, Marcus,” Claire replied, her voice sharpening. “And because every time I tried to talk to you about my work, you told me my job embarrassed you. You told me your clients' wives organized galas while I changed wound dressings. So, I stopped talking. I let you believe whatever made your fragile ego feel safe.”

Vanessa quickly stepped away from Marcus, her fingers slipping out of his arm. “Marcus... you told me Hale Development was underwriting the hospital’s new wing. You told me you were a billionaire.”

“I am! I mean, we are growing!” Marcus panicked, turning to Vanessa, then back to Claire. “Claire, listen to me. We’re married. Everything you own is community property. If Bennett Medical is worth millions, then half of it belongs to me!”

Claire smiled. It was the first time she had smiled all morning, and it terrified Marcus more than any scream could have.

She reached down, picked up the manila folder from the table, and flipped to page fourteen.

“Do you remember the post-nuptial agreement you forced me to sign five years ago?” Claire asked, her thumb running along the bolded text. “The one Grant drafted to ensure that if we ever divorced, I wouldn't get a single share of Hale Development? You insisted on a strict, ironclad Separation of Extramarital Corporate Wealth clause. You wanted to make sure that if I ever tried to sue you, your business would remain entirely untouched by me.”

Claire turned the document around, pointing to a specific paragraph.

“According to your own document, Marcus: 'Neither party shall have any legal right, claim, or claim of equity to any business entity, asset, appreciation of value, or foundation created under the respective party's maiden or separate corporate name during or prior to the marriage.' You built a wall to keep me out of your kingdom, Marcus. But all you did was lock yourself in a graveyard.”

Grant finally lowered his phone, his face pale. “Marcus... the clause is reciprocal. I wrote it that way so she couldn't find a loophole. It means... it means we can’t touch her companies.”

“Shut up, Grant!” Marcus roared, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple. He lunged toward Claire, but Dr. Cole immediately stepped between them, his tall frame blocking Marcus completely.

“I suggest you calm down, Mr. Hale,” Dr. Cole warned coldly. “This is an intensive care unit. Security is already on their way up because of your brother's unauthorized recording. If you cause a scene, I will personally have you removed from this building, and I will ensure you are barred from visiting hours.”
