Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist and Sweet Revenge

“Sit down, Mr. Hale!” Judge Walters thundered, banging her gavel repeatedly. “One more outburst and I will have the bailiff arrest you!”

Marcus collapsed back into his chair, his hands shaking violently. He looked at Grant, but his brother was staring at the floor, sweating profusely through his camel-colored coat. He looked back at the gallery for Vanessa, but she was already backing out of the courtroom doors, her heels clicking rapidly as she abandoned ship.

Claire stood up calmly, smoothing down her blazer. She walked over to the podium, looking directly at the man she had loved for over a decade.

“Twelve years ago, Marcus, you told me we were a team,” Claire said, her voice echoing perfectly in the courtroom. “But the moment you tasted a little bit of success, you decided that you were the king and I was just the servant who helped build your throne. You thought you could humiliate me in that waiting room while your mother was fighting for her life. You thought your brother's camera would capture my defeat.”

She reached into her bag, pulled out the manila folder Marcus had served her two days ago, and placed it gently on the podium.

“I’ve signed the papers, Marcus. Exactly as you requested. A clean break.”

“Claire... please,” Marcus begged, his voice cracking as tears finally welled in his eyes. He reached across the table, his fingers desperately searching for hers. “We can talk about this. We can fix this. I was confused. Grant and Vanessa... they pressured me! They told me you were holding me back! I still love you. Think about everything we’ve been through!”

“I am thinking about everything we’ve been through,” Claire said softly. “I’m thinking about how I loaned you my grandmother’s inheritance while I skipped meals. I’m thinking about how you laughed at my nursing uniforms. And I’m thinking about your mother, who had to give me her land just to protect herself from her own sons.”

Claire turned away from him, looking up at the judge.

“Your Honor, the divorce is settled. Hale Development is currently underwater by six million dollars due to their defaulted loans on the Northside project. By tomorrow morning, BME Holdings will purchase those defaulted bank notes. I am buying Hale Development out of bankruptcy for pennies on the dollar.”

Marcus stared at her, his breath hitching. “You’re... you’re buying my company?”

“I’m buying the assets,” Claire corrected him coldly. “I’m dissolving the development division entirely. The Northside plot will be converted into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility and an affordable senior housing complex. It will be named the Ruth & Evelyn Medical Center.”

Grant jumped up, his face red. “What about us? What about our shares? What about our jobs?”

Arthur Vance smiled thinly. “Mr. Grant Hale, as the chief legal officer who authorized fraudulent financial statements to secure those bank loans, you will likely be spending the next several months answering questions from the federal banking commission. Your jobs no longer exist.”

Claire walked toward the courtroom exit, her movements fluid and unhurried.

Marcus ran out into the hallway after her, ignoring his attorney’s shouts. He caught up to her near the elevators, his expensive suit now looking rumpled and pathetic.

“Claire! You can’t leave me with nothing!” Marcus cried out, collapsing to his knees on the polished marble floor as a crowd of lawyers and paralegals stopped to watch. “I have nothing left! The house is in foreclosure, the company is gone, my mother won't even take my calls! How am I supposed to pay my bills? How am I supposed to survive?”

Claire stopped as the elevator doors chimed and slid open. She looked down at him one last time, her expression entirely devoid of anger—only a peaceful, unshakeable indifference remained.

She reached into her purse, pulled out a crisp, single twenty-dollar bill, and let it flutter down through the air, landing gently on Marcus’s polished leather shoes.

“That’s for a cab, Marcus,” Claire said quietly as she stepped into the elevator. “I’d suggest you use it to find a job that pays by the hour. I hear they’re always looking for quiet hands.”

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the sound of Marcus’s desperate pleas, leaving Claire in perfect, beautiful silence.
