Chapter 9 - The Public Backfire
The internet moves with a terrifying velocity, fueled by outrage and incomplete truths. Within twenty-four hours, news vans were parked outside the BME Holdings headquarters. Protestors, whipped into a frenzy by Marcus’s coordinated online media campaign, stood on the sidewalks holding signs that read “Profits Over Patients” and “Give Marcus His Company Back.”
Inside the executive boardroom, the senior executives of Bennett Medical were panicked.
“Our stock valuation hasn't dropped because we’re privately held, but our rural transport contracts are threatening to pause their renewals,” the Chief Operating Officer said, sweating through his shirt. “The public narrative is disastrous, Claire. They see you as a cold, calculating corporate monster who weaponized a medical crisis to bankrupt her husband.”
Claire sat at the head of the long glass table, her hands folded neatly. She looked entirely unbothered, her grandmother’s wooden comb resting on the notepad in front of her.
“Let them talk,” Claire said quietly.
“Claire, with all due respect, we can’t just sit here!” the PR director pleaded. “Marcus is scheduled to appear on a live national morning talk show tomorrow to tell his side of the story. He’s playing the victim perfectly. He’s going to crucify our brand.”
Claire stood up, leaning over the table, her presence suddenly commanding the entire room.
“Marcus wants a stage,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a dangerously calm register. “Let’s give him the biggest stage possible. Contact the network producing that morning show. Tell them I will agree to a live, unscripted, face-to-face interview with Marcus on national television tomorrow morning. But on one condition.”
The PR director blinked. “What condition?”
“The interview must be broadcast live from the lobby of the Ruth & Evelyn Medical Center,” Claire replied, a sharp, cold edge entering her eyes. “And Marcus must bring his brother Grant and his business partner Vanessa Price with him to verify his corporate claims.”
The next morning, the grand lobby of the medical center was transformed into a television studio. Bright studio lights cut through the morning shadow, and three high-definition cameras were locked in place.
Marcus arrived wearing a borrowed suit that was slightly too large for him, trying to look dignified but humbled. Grant walked behind him, looking nervous, while Vanessa—who had been legally subpoenaed by Claire’s lawyers to attend the broadcast regarding corporate assets—sat stiffly in the green room, her face tight with anger.
The host, a seasoned investigative journalist named Thomas Vance, adjusted his earpiece as the producer counted down.
“Three... two... one... we are live.”
“Good morning,” Thomas Vance said directly into the camera. “Today, we are bringing you a live, exclusive confrontation in a story that has gripped the nation. On my left is Marcus Hale, former CEO of Hale Development, who claims his multi-millionaire wife financially destroyed him during his mother's emergency heart surgery. On my right is Claire Bennett Hale, CEO of Bennett Medical Enterprises. Marcus, let’s start with you.”

Marcus leaned into his microphone, his voice dripping with rehearsed emotion. “Thank you, Thomas. I just want people to know the truth. Claire used her immense wealth to manipulate the hospital staff, cut off my mother's insurance, and force me to sign away my life’s work while I was too emotionally broken to defend myself. She used a post-nuptial agreement like a weapon.”
Thomas Vance turned to Claire. “Mrs. Hale, these are serious allegations. The video your husband posted shows you sitting with complete indifference while he was in agony. How do you respond?”
