Chapter 2: The Beggar at the Banquet

The gallery grew quiet as Ethan pushed his way through the crowd, locking eyes with Avery. Security moved to stop him, but Avery raised a manicured hand, signaling them to hold. Her face was an unreadable mask of absolute calm.

"Avery," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking. He didn't care that dozens of wealthy patrons and influencers were watching. "Please. I made the biggest mistake of my life. Chloe used me, she ruined me... but you, you were always my anchor. I never stopped loving you."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Someone raised their phone, recording.

Ethan dropped to his knees right there on the polished concrete floor. The mighty, arrogant Ethan was weeping. "I know I don’t deserve it, but please, Avery. Come back to me. Let's rebuild what we had. I’ll do anything. Just give me one more chance."

The silence in the room was suffocating. Every eye was on Avery.

She walked over to him slowly, the heels of her boots clicking sharply. She looked down at his kneeling form, not with anger, and not with pity. She looked at him with complete indifference.

"Get up, Ethan," she said softly, her voice carrying across the quiet room. "You're embarrassing yourself. And more importantly, you're ruining my husband's carpet."

From the back of the gallery, a collective, sharp intake of breath echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

Ethan froze, the color draining completely from his face. "Your... what?" he whispered, his voice trembling so violently it was barely audible.

Before he could process the word, the heavy oak doors at the VIP entrance swung open. A man stepped through, flanked by two towering men in tailored suits. He wasn't just wealthy; he carried the kind of effortless, generational authority that made the billionaire influencers in the room suddenly look like children playing dress-up.

It was Julian Vance—the elusive tech mogul and real estate titan who owned half the skyline outside.

"Is there a problem here, darling?" Julian asked, his deep baritone cutting through the suffocating silence. He walked over seamlessly, slipping a casual but possessive hand around Avery’s waist.

Avery’s unreadable mask finally broke, melting into a genuine, radiant smile. "No problem, Julian. Just a ghost from the past trying to haunt the present."

Ethan stumbled backward as he scrambled to his feet, his knees shaking. "Avery... you married him? This is a joke, right? You’re doing this to get back at me!"

Julian didn't look angry. Instead, a cold, amused smirk played on his lips. He glanced down at the floor, then up at Ethan. "You must be Ethan. The boy who traded a diamond for a piece of broken glass."

"Shut up!" Ethan snapped, completely losing his mind as the phones in the crowd flashed, capturing his ultimate humiliation. "She loved me! We spent five years building a life!"

"And you spent five minutes destroying it with Chloe," Avery interrupted, her voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp. "You thought Chloe was your ticket to the top. But you forgot one thing, Ethan—I didn't just support your career. I created it. Every investor you ever met, every contract you ever signed, came through my family's network. When you walked out on me, I simply took my network back."

The realization hit Ethan like a physical blow. The sudden audits, the canceled contracts, Chloe fleeing the country the second his bank accounts were frozen... it hadn't been bad luck. It had been Avery.

"Julian," Avery said, turning her back on Ethan completely as if he had ceased to exist. "The charity auction is about to start. We shouldn't keep our guests waiting for a side-show."

"Agreed," Julian murmured, kissing her temple. He looked over Avery’s shoulder at the head of security. "Clear the trash out of the gallery. And send Mr. Vance's dry-cleaning bill for the carpet to Ethan's—oh, wait, I bought his bankrupt firm this morning. Send it to his eviction address."

As security grabbed Ethan by the arms, dragging him kicking and screaming toward the exit, the crowd immediately turned away, laughing and whispering among themselves. The cameras shifted from Ethan's weeping face back to the power couple at the center of the room.

Ethan had wanted a second chance, but as the heavy gallery doors slammed shut behind him, locking him out in the cold rain, he finally understood: Avery hadn't just moved on. She had rewritten the entire game, and he was completely erased.
