Chapter 10 - THE UNEXPECTED WILL“The greatest empire isn’t built on fear. It’s built on what you choose to protect.”ONE YEAR LATER

The Vance Manor had been completely restored, transformed from a cold, fortress-like mansion into a warm, bright estate filled with life, laughter, and green gardens.

Elena ran the estate with grace and power, treated not as an employee, but as an equal partner in my legitimate business operations. I had completely dismantled the mafia underworld connections, turning my wealth toward child protection foundations and community rebuilding.

I sat in my grand office, watching through the floor-to-ceiling windows as three-year-old Nora—now four—ran through the sunny garden with a golden retriever puppy I had bought her for her birthday.

My attorney, Mr. Sterling, stepped into the room, holding a thick leather folder.

“Mr. Vance,” Sterling said, laying the documents on my desk. “We’ve finally finished auditing your late uncle Julian’s secret offshore accounts, as well as the original Scarlatti family trust.”

“Did you transfer the funds to the charity foundations?” I asked without turning around.

“Most of it, yes,” Sterling hesitated, coughing slightly. “However
we found a sealed safe-deposit box in Zurich that belonged to your late mother, Sarah Vance. It was opened yesterday under court order.”

I turned around slowly. “My mother?”

Sterling opened the folder and placed a yellowed, hand-written document on the desk alongside a small, antique velvet box.

“Your mother didn't just flee your father because he was a mobster, Luca,” Sterling explained softly. “She left because she discovered that the Scarlatti empire wasn't legally his. It was legally registered under her family name—the Vance bloodline. She was the sole owner of the entire city's land deeds.”

I picked up the hand-written letter. My mother’s delicate handwriting filled the page:

My dearest Luca, If you are reading this, it means you survived the darkness. Do not use this wealth for revenge. Use it to build a sanctuary for those who have nowhere else to go. Remember: strength is not tested by how many people fear you, but by how many people feel safe in your arms.

I closed my eyes, letting a deep, peaceful breath fill my lungs for the first time in my life.

Attached to the bottom of the deed was a final codicil, added by my mother right before her death:

In the event of my son’s survival, 50% of the estate shall go to Luca Vance. The remaining 50% shall be held in trust for the children of Arthur Miller—the man who gave his life to protect us.

I looked out the window.

Down in the garden, Nora was swinging on a wooden tire swing, laughing loudly as Elena pushed her into the bright afternoon sun.

I smiled, picking up my pen, and signed the final papers—transferring half of the multi-billion-dollar empire directly into a trust fund for the little girl who had once stood barefoot on a shaky stool, trying to save her mother with ice-cold water.

The Reaper was dead.
