Chapter 9 - WASHING AWAY THE PASTâBlood doesnât make a family. Protection does.âThe storm cleared as the first rays of dawn broke over the horizon, painting the sky in soft shades of gold and purple. The estate was silent. The syndicate was gone, Julian was dead, and the shadows that had haunted my entire life had finally been burned to ash.

I walked down into the subterranean vault and punched in the release code.
The massive blast doors groaned open.
Elena was sitting on the sofa, holding a warm cup of tea, while Marcus was showing Nora how to play a game on his tablet. The moment the door opened, Nora looked up.
She didn't see the blood on my coat or the exhaustion in my eyes. She only saw the man who had promised to protect her.
âMr. Luca!â she squeaked, jumping off the sofa and running across the room on her tiny feet.
I dropped to one knee, letting her wrap her small arms around my neck. Her warm, soft cheek pressed against mine, washing away twenty years of pain and bitterness in a single second.
âDid you clean the stain?â she asked innocently, pulling back to look at me.
âYes, Nora,â I said, my voice thick with emotion as I looked up at Elena, who was crying tears of pure relief. âThe stain is finally gone. Forever.â
Elena stepped forward, bowing deeply. âMr. Vance⊠I donât know how to ever repay you. You saved our lives. Weâll pack our things and leave so you can rebuild your homeââ
âYouâre not going anywhere, Elena,â I interrupted, standing up and taking Nora into my arms. âYour father was an innocent man who sacrificed everything to help my mother. You and Nora are family now.â
May you like
Elena gasped, covering her mouth as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. âMr. Vance⊠Iâm just a maidâŠâ
âNo,â I corrected gently. âYou are the head manager of the Vance estate. And NoraâŠâ I looked at the three-year-old girl who was currently playing with the silver buttons on my suit jacket. ââŠNora will never have to wash another shirt as long as she lives.â
