Chapter 3 - THE SINS OF THE FATHER“The man who raised me was either a cold-blooded murderer, or a pawn in a game much bigger than us.”My breath hitched. Memories I had buried deep beneath layers of steel and money exploded into my mind. I remembered the red flames licking the walls of our modest servant quarters. I remembered the screaming, the suffocating smoke, and the heavy oak doors that refused to budge no matter how hard my young mother kicked them.

“Your father was Arthur Miller?” I asked, my fists clenching so hard my nails bit into my palms.

“Yes,” Elena wept. “After the fire, the police issued a warrant for his arrest. He fled the city and took me with him. He changed our names, raised me in poverty, and spent every night crying himself to sleep, swearing he was innocent! He said someone framed him!”

“Where is Arthur now?” I demanded.

“He died three years ago
right before Nora was born,” she whimpered. “Harland discovered who I really was six months ago. He found out I was Arthur Miller’s daughter. He threatened to go to the rival syndicates and tell them I was the daughter of the man who killed your mother. He said they would butcher me and my baby to get back at you!”

The puzzle pieces were assembling themselves into a nightmare. Harland hadn't just been a abusive manager; he was a parasite leeching off a frightened woman, using the ghost of my painful past as a weapon against her.

“Why didn't you run?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

“Where could I go?” Elena looked up, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “I have no money, no family, and a sick child. Harland promised that as long as I worked myself to the bone without pay, he wouldn’t reveal my identity to your enemies. But today
 when I collapsed from fever
he told Nora that if she didn’t clean your shirts, you would burn us alive just like your mother burned.”

A dark, terrifying rage enveloped my soul. The kind of rage that built empires and destroyed legacies.

Harland didn't just break my rules. He used a dead mother's memory to torture a mother and child.

Before I could speak, the mansion’s heavy security alarm began to blare throughout the estate. Red emergency lights flashed against the darkness of the room.

My earpiece crackled to life with the panicked voice of my head bodyguard, Marcus.

“Boss! We have a breach at the main perimeter! It’s the Syndicate! They’ve breached the gates—and Harland is leading them!”
