Chapter 2 - THE SNAKES UNMASKED"Emily!"

Robert’s voice was strained, breathless, and desperate. He grabbed for my arm, but I smoothly pulled back, letting his hand grasp empty air.

"Don't touch me," I said coldly, my eyes locked on his.

"Emily, sweetie, please!" Evelyn stepped forward, her former icy condescension completely replaced by a sickly sweet, trembling smile. "We... we didn't know! Why didn't you tell us you were the valedictorian? Why were you so secretive?"

"Tell you?" I let out a soft, bitter laugh. "Evelyn, when I tried to give Dad my invitation on Tuesday, he handed it straight to Madison and told me I was just a nurse's assistant who would be buried in the crowd."

"I was just trying to teach you humility!" Robert stammered, his eyes darting nervously as passing professors and students glanced at our group. "I—I didn't mean it like that! You know how important Madison's brand is right now, Emily. We were just supporting her!"

"Supporting her by pushing your own daughter onto the wet concrete?" I replied, stepping right into his space. "You physically yanked me into the rain, Dad. You told me I’d ruin her photos."

Madison stepped up, her eyes flashing with jealousy despite the tears streaming down her makeup. "You did this on purpose! You set us up! You wanted to embarrass us in front of everyone! You knew I was posting about this VIP pass all morning!"

"I set you up?" I looked at Madison with disdain. "You stole my invitation, stole my moment, and walked in here like you owned the place. You embarrassed yourself the moment you mistook my hard work for your photo opportunity."

"Emily, please, let's talk about this like a family," Robert pleaded, taking a step closer, his hands raised in surrender. "We are so proud of you. Look at you! Valedictorian! A patented research grant! We can celebrate at the best restaurant in Boston tonight. My treat. We’ll bring all of Madison’s followers along—we can film a family reconciliation!"

I looked at him, feeling a sudden, profound sense of pity—not for myself, but for him. He was so consumed by superficial clout that even now, he saw my life's work as nothing more than content for a social media page.

"There is no 'we', Dad," I said quietly. "You made your choice outside those doors. You chose Madison’s fake image over my reality."

"Emily, don't be ungrateful!" Evelyn snapped, losing her composure for a split second before forcing her fake smile back on. "Your father paid for your roof while you were growing up! You owe this family!"

"I paid my own tuition through scholarships, research stipends, and working night shifts as an assistant," I countered sharply. "You didn't give me a single cent for medical school. Not one."

Before Evelyn could fire back, two heavy security guards stepped up behind me, accompanied by Dean Carter.

"Is there a problem here, Dr. Parker?" the head of security asked sternly, eyeing Robert and Evelyn.

"These people are disturbing Dr. Parker," Dean Carter said coldly, recognizing Robert from the incident at the VIP entrance earlier. "Mr. Parker, if you and your family do not return to your designated seats or exit the building, security will escort you off the premises immediately."

Robert’s face paled. "Dean Carter, you don't understand, I'm her father!"

"A father wouldn't leave his daughter in a storm," Dean Carter replied without a shred of sympathy. "Dr. Parker, the investor is waiting."

I turned my back on them without another word. As I walked down the long corridor toward the Green Room, I could hear Madison weeping angrily behind me and Robert begging security to let them follow.

They thought this was the end of their humiliation. They had no idea that the real storm was just beginning.
