Chapter 6 - THE PUBLIC MELTDOWNBy eight o'clock that evening, the story had completely blown up.

A video recorded by a medical student showing Robert shoving me into the rain, juxtaposed with clips of my valedictorian speech and Robert kneeling on the floor begging for the contract, had gone viral across TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook.
The headline was trending globally: "Billion-Dollar Medical Heiress & Valedictorian Thrown in Rain by Abusive Father—Now He Faces Total Bankruptcy."
I sat in my new high-rise apartment near the medical center—a luxury suite provided as part of my new position with the Harrison Research Institute—watching the news report on my laptop.
Madison’s social media accounts had been completely swarmed by millions of furious netizens. Her comment section was a graveyard of backlash. The sponsors who had paid her for promotional posts immediately canceled her contracts, issuing public statements cutting all ties with her.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.
I answered it. "Hello?"
"Emily... please... you have to help us..."
It was Evelyn. Her voice was unrecognizable—raspy, hysterical, and broken.
"Evelyn," I said flatly. "How did you get this number?"
"It doesn't matter! Emily, you have to post a video! You have to tell the internet that it was all a fake prank! People are protesting outside our house! The bank just sent a notice of foreclosure on the mansion! Robert is... Robert is having a nervous breakdown!"
"A fake prank?" I scoffed. "You want me to lie to protect the people who abused me for years?"
"We are your family!" she shrieked. "Madison lost all her brand deals! She can't even leave her room without people recognizing her and filming her! Her career is ruined!"
"Madison never had a career, Evelyn. She had an illusion funded by my father's greed," I replied coldly. "And now the illusion is gone."
"You heartless monster!" Evelyn sobbed. "Your father is in the living room crying! The bank is coming to repossess his cars tomorrow morning! Is this what you wanted? To destroy us?"
"I didn't destroy you, Evelyn," I said, standing up and looking out the window over the glittering Boston skyline. "You destroyed yourselves the moment you decided that cruelty was acceptable as long as nobody was watching. But the world was watching today."
"Emily, wait—"
I hung up the phone and blocked the number permanently.
Ten minutes later, my door bell rang.
I walked over, checking the security monitor. Standing outside my apartment door was not Evelyn or Madison.
It was my father.
He looked completely broken. His expensive suit was crumpled and wet from the continuing storm outside. His eyes were bloodshot, hair disheveled, standing alone in the hallway with a thick brown envelope in his shaking hands.

I unlocked the door, keeping the security chain engaged. "What are you doing here, Robert?"
He looked up at me, his lip trembling. "Emily... please. Just give me five minutes. I brought something you need to see."
