Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW INVESTORThe Green Room was grand, furnished with leather couches, glass coffee tables, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-swept campus. Standing near the window, holding a crystal glass of water, was a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit. His hair was silver at the temples, and his presence commanded the entire room.

As I walked in, he turned around.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Lord Harrison?" I gasped.

Sir Arthur Harrison—the head of Harrison Global Bio-Tech, the largest pharmaceutical and medical research conglomerate in Europe and North America. He was a legendary titan in the medical world, a billionaire philanthropist known for ruthlessly tearing down corrupt institutions and funding world-changing science.

"Dr. Emily Parker," Sir Arthur said, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his stern face. He walked over and extended his hand. "Or should I say, the young woman who just saved my company’s future?"

I shook his hand, bewildered. "I... I don't understand, sir."

"Your research paper on early-stage cellular targeting," Sir Arthur explained, gesturing for me to sit down. "My team reviewed it six months ago when you submitted it for the grant. While other doctors were focusing on expensive, late-stage treatments that line the pockets of big pharma, you focused on affordable, early intervention. It’s brilliant. It’s groundbreaking. And today, my foundation officially locked in the $10 million clinical trial funding for your project."

Ten million dollars.

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Thank you, Sir Arthur. I... I am beyond honored."

"No, Dr. Parker, the honor is ours," he replied, his eyes turning cold and serious. "However... as I was arriving at the VIP entrance thirty minutes ago in my limousine, I happened to witness a rather disgraceful display."

I froze. "You were there?"

"I was," Sir Arthur said, leaning back. "I saw a man violently pull a young woman out of the entrance, hurl verbal abuse at her, and shove her onto the steps before walking inside with a young girl waving a gold VIP envelope. I was about to have my security intervene, but then I realized... the young woman in the rain was you."

I squeezed my hands together, the memory making my chest tighten. "That was my father, Robert Parker. And my stepsister."

"I gathered as much," Sir Arthur said quietly. "A man who treats his own brilliant daughter like trash while parading around with a stolen VIP pass is a man of zero character. But what he doesn't know, Dr. Emily, is that Harrison Global has business dealings across this entire city."

Sir Arthur took a sip of his water and looked at me intently. "Your father owns Parker Logistics, doesn't he?"

I nodded slowly. "Yes. A regional shipping and supply company."

"And he has been desperately bidding for the primary medical transportation contract for Jefferson University Hospital for the past three years, correct?"

"Yes... it's all he ever talks about at dinner," I admitted. "He said winning that contract would make his company worth tens of millions."

Sir Arthur chuckled—a dry, chilling sound. "Well, Dr. Parker, as the chief benefactor of Jefferson Medical University and the majority board member of its hospital network, that contract choice ultimately rests on my desk. And more importantly... it rests on yours."

I blinked, stunned. "Mine?"

"You are now the head of the new Harrison-Parker Bio-Tech Research Wing," Sir Arthur declared, sliding an official document across the table to me. "You have absolute veto power over all supply chain contracts associated with your research and the hospital wing. If you want Parker Logistics blacklisted from the entire medical sector, one signature from you right now will make it happen."

I looked at the paper, then at the pen sitting beside it.

My father had spent his entire life pushing me down, treating me as a useless burden, and risking my future to boost Madison’s superficial ambition. Now, his entire financial dream was resting in the palm of my hand.
