Chapter 4 - THE RUNWAY OF RECKONINGThe music swelled—a haunting, melancholic cello arrangement mixed with the steady, rhythmic ticking of a vintage clock.

Out on the runway, the first model glided into the blinding glare of forty-foot white lights, wearing Morning After. The ivory silk gown caught the light, moving with a liquid grace that drew immediate gasps from the front row of fashion critics.

In the VIP section, flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm. Marcus Vance sat rigidly in his front-row seat, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable. He had received Claire’s files hours ago, and while his legal team was still auditing the metadata, the undeniable, breathtaking quality of the garments parading before him made his stomach churn. The clothes were masterpieces. There was no denying that.

Backstage, Ethan stood by the monitor bank, watching the audience's reaction with a desperate, manic hope. If they could just get through the thirty-two pieces, if Vanessa could close the show in Cathedral, they could spin the leaked files as a disgruntled former contractor’s smear campaign. They could weather the storm.

"Dress two, moving!" the stage manager barked.

Model after model walked the runway. Horizon, Roots, Ashes. Each piece carried the unmistakable, brilliant touch of Claire’s architectural design philosophy. The audience was transfixed. The murmurs of doubt generated by Claire’s leaked emails were momentarily drowned out by the sheer aesthetic triumph of the collection.

Ethan let out a long, shuddering breath of relief. He glanced back toward the shadows where Claire had been standing.

She was gone.

His blood ran cold. He spun around, grabbing the nearest production assistant. "Where is she? Where did Claire go?"

"She... she walked out toward the VIP seating area about two minutes ago," the assistant stammerhed, pointing toward the side aisle.

Ethan swore loudly, pushing past racks of spare dresses, tearing open the heavy curtain that led directly to the side of the main auditorium.

Out on the runway, Vanessa Hale was making her penultimate turn in a cascading midnight-blue velvet gown, smiling radiantly as the cameras tracked her every movement.

The announcer's voice boomed through the overhead speakers:

"And now, presenting the finale piece of the Rebirth collection... the masterpiece... Cathedral."

The music shifted. The lights dimmed to an amber, cathedral-like glow.

From the opposite end of the runway, Vanessa emerged once more, now draped in the magnificent, heavy black evening gown built around an internal framework resembling stained-glass windows. The fabric swallowed the light, creating an aura of dark, sovereign majesty.

The audience erupted into spontaneous applause. Fashion editors leaned forward, whispering furiously among themselves, recognizing the sheer genius of the architecture holding the heavy fabric away from the model's frame in geometric perfection.

Vanessa struck her final pose at the end of the runway, lifting her chin to catch the camera's gaze.

She didn't notice the solitary figure walking slowly down the side aisle toward the front row.

She didn't see Marcus Vance stand up from his seat, his eyes locked not on Vanessa, but on the woman approaching the stage.

Claire Bennett stepped into the amber light, wearing a simple, tailored black blazer and carrying her scarred leather portfolio.

She didn't shout. She didn't run. She simply reached the base of the runway, looked up at Vanessa Hale, and spoke into a stray wireless mic that a sound technician had dropped on the edge of the stage.

"Turn around, Vanessa," Claire’s voice echoed crisply through the massive sound system, silencing the applause in a single heartbeat. "Let everyone see the back of the dress."
